What is Place?

Place is a foundational concept in geography that examines how physical locations, environments, and spatial contexts shape human experience, identity, and social organization. Students across geography, urban studies, environmental science, and humanities courses engage with place as a way to understand how people interact with and assign meaning to the world around them. What makes the concept academically rich is its dual nature: place can be analyzed as a concrete, mappable location or as a subjective, lived experience, and strong scholarship often bridges both dimensions to reveal how context drives behavior, policy, and culture.

The papers archived under this topic reflect a broad range of approaches. Some take a case-study format, grounding analysis in specific events or organizations such as the Cuyahoga River valley to examine environmental and community dynamics. Others use comparative methods, setting distinct situations side by side — as seen in work contrasting the psychological impact of Katrina and the Lusitania — to draw out how different places and circumstances produce different outcomes. Policy-oriented approaches also appear, with writers assessing how decisions at institutional or governmental levels affect communities in particular locations.

A strong essay on place benefits from a clearly scoped thesis that commits to either a specific geographic site or a defined theoretical angle — attempting both without adequate focus is a common pitfall. Evidence drawn from case studies, historical context, and documented community outcomes tends to carry the most weight. Writers should avoid treating place as mere backdrop; the most persuasive essays position location itself as an active factor that shapes the issues, reasons, and life experiences under analysis.

Assassination of President Kennedy in 1963
The assassination of President John F. Kennedy was indeed a turning point in American History. Financial Accounting in Module 2, the $35,000
This paper attempts – a futile effort mind you – to address an online university's tragicomic idea of an accounting problem. Starting with a rather unorthodox approach to accounting – a quasi-balance sheet that does not balance – we add a few transactions to that, without ever resolving the core problem of the fictitious numbers imploding on themselves.

Intrusion detection and prevention in corporate information systems
Technology has now become a euphemism for the information age. As individuals, information rarely escapes our grasp as now anybody can have access to its vast array of knowledge. More importantly, in the midst of our global society, technology has a profound role on our nation's ability to participate in a more competitive environment. As the age old adage states, "Knowledge is power," and in many instances this statement is correct. Information allows individuals to make better informed decisions regarding projects that can have grave implications on society if the solution is incorrect. Further, information allows more convenience in regards to access and search of particular concepts. Technology allows humans to live longer while allowing them to live more productive lives (Gregg, 2006). The benefits that technology derives are as difficult to enumerate as they are to fully comprehend. However, it is my contention that the information age has grave consequences on society, especially if society is dependent on specialized individuals to conduct and oversee IT systems. This is particularly true if these entities lack strong ethical value or virtue. As such, it is my belief that companies should not hire experienced hackers to protect their coveted information systems. If experience is indeed needed on the part of companies, strong oversight, and protections should be used to guard against fraudulent activities. By hiring experienced hackers, evidence has proven that more harm can potentially be done than any amount of potential good (Hammond, 2005).
