What is Place?

Place is a foundational concept in geography that examines how physical locations, environments, and spatial contexts shape human experience, identity, and social organization. Students across geography, urban studies, environmental science, and humanities courses engage with place as a way to understand how people interact with and assign meaning to the world around them. What makes the concept academically rich is its dual nature: place can be analyzed as a concrete, mappable location or as a subjective, lived experience, and strong scholarship often bridges both dimensions to reveal how context drives behavior, policy, and culture.

The papers archived under this topic reflect a broad range of approaches. Some take a case-study format, grounding analysis in specific events or organizations such as the Cuyahoga River valley to examine environmental and community dynamics. Others use comparative methods, setting distinct situations side by side — as seen in work contrasting the psychological impact of Katrina and the Lusitania — to draw out how different places and circumstances produce different outcomes. Policy-oriented approaches also appear, with writers assessing how decisions at institutional or governmental levels affect communities in particular locations.

A strong essay on place benefits from a clearly scoped thesis that commits to either a specific geographic site or a defined theoretical angle — attempting both without adequate focus is a common pitfall. Evidence drawn from case studies, historical context, and documented community outcomes tends to carry the most weight. Writers should avoid treating place as mere backdrop; the most persuasive essays position location itself as an active factor that shapes the issues, reasons, and life experiences under analysis.

Apple's product development strategy and supplier relations in China
China and Apple seem to have experienced a love relationship which is no surprise since Apple's products, although ‘designed' in California, are mostly produced in China. As recent as August, 2012, Canalys indicated that China accounted for 27 percent of global smartphone shipments overall in the quarter, compared with 16 percent for the U.S. (CNN Money). Apple's relations with suppliers are, however, more pessimistic. Apple's code of conduct in 2007 determined that "working conditions in Apple's supply chain are safe, that workers are treated with respect and dignity, and that manufacturing processes are environmentally responsible" (Duhigg & Burboza, January 25, 2012) The reality, however, as evidenced by working condition within the Foxconn factory proved otherwise, and Apple's workers, despite slight and voiced improvement, are still paid paltry wages with horrendous working conditions that demand improvement. Apple's present situation may best be summed up as shades of gray. Apple and China have maintained something of their flourishing relationship, but Apple seems to slowing somewhat due to external conditions. These mostly include their exorbitant price for their iPhone which is causing China, for the first time, to prefer other companies as suppliers. As of the last quarter, Android sold 100 million quarterly smartphone shipments and shared that No. 1 spot with Samsung who boasted a 31 percent share of the market. Apple and Nokia meanwhile claimed second two spots. But Apple still seems to be going strong.

GAAP and IFRS: comparing accounting standards with BAE Systems analysis
The differences between GAAP and IFRS guidelines are very important to consider. Without knowing what the differences are and how they affect companies in the US and abroad, investors can have trouble determining what they should do to assess the value of a company. That can cause them to avoid mergers and acquisitions that would be highly valuable, and it can also cause them to get involved in investments that could end up being detrimental to their financial health.

Pharmaceutical autonomy and alcohol regulation policy
nswers to the following five questions about alcohol and drug policy issues: 1)Many Americans have trouble getting to sleep. As a results they may turn to sleeping pills to help them get some ZZZs. How do you feel about the prescribing of sleeping pills for people to assist them with sleeping? Should our medical industry instead be writing prescriptions for vigorous activity which would also help people sleep better? How about a prescription for caffeine avoidance? 2)Considering the following: 1. Alcohol kills more young people than all illicit drugs combined. (Grunbaum,. 2002)2. Alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes kill someone every 31 minutes and non-fatally injure someone every two minutes (NHTSA 2006). 3. During 2005, 16,885 people in the U.S. died in alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes, representing 39% of all traffic-related deaths versus 18% rate for Marijuana and Cocaine (NHTSA 2006). Do you think that alcohol should remain a "legal drug" free of regulation on consumption? 3) Discuss your position on red wine consumption as a protective factor for heart disease. What is it specifically in red wine that is considered cardio protective? Or is this just another excuse for people to regularly drink wine? 4)How do you feel about the wide availability of medical marijuana cards and clinics? 5)Do you feel that "abstaining" from a substance which one is addicted to is crucial for treatment? For example, do you believe that if one is being treated for alcoholism that they must "abstain" from drinking any alcohol in order to be in recovery?
