What is Place?

Place is a foundational concept in geography that examines how physical locations, environments, and spatial contexts shape human experience, identity, and social organization. Students across geography, urban studies, environmental science, and humanities courses engage with place as a way to understand how people interact with and assign meaning to the world around them. What makes the concept academically rich is its dual nature: place can be analyzed as a concrete, mappable location or as a subjective, lived experience, and strong scholarship often bridges both dimensions to reveal how context drives behavior, policy, and culture.

The papers archived under this topic reflect a broad range of approaches. Some take a case-study format, grounding analysis in specific events or organizations such as the Cuyahoga River valley to examine environmental and community dynamics. Others use comparative methods, setting distinct situations side by side — as seen in work contrasting the psychological impact of Katrina and the Lusitania — to draw out how different places and circumstances produce different outcomes. Policy-oriented approaches also appear, with writers assessing how decisions at institutional or governmental levels affect communities in particular locations.

A strong essay on place benefits from a clearly scoped thesis that commits to either a specific geographic site or a defined theoretical angle — attempting both without adequate focus is a common pitfall. Evidence drawn from case studies, historical context, and documented community outcomes tends to carry the most weight. Writers should avoid treating place as mere backdrop; the most persuasive essays position location itself as an active factor that shapes the issues, reasons, and life experiences under analysis.

Wealth Disparity Executives as Owners vs. Executives
A very contentious issue arising within public domain is that of compensation and its repercussions on overall society. Over the past 3 decades executive compensation has ballooned while the average worker continues to see only modest gains in income. The average annual earnings of the top 1 percent of wage earners grew 156 percent from 1979 to 2007; for the top 0.1 percent they grew 362 percent (Mishel, Bivens, Gould, and Shierholz 2012). In contrast, earners in the 90th to 95th percentiles had wage growth of 34 percent, less than a tenth as much as those in the top 0.1 percent tier. Workers in the bottom 90 percent had the weakest wage growth, at 17 percent from 1979 to 2007. If inflation averaged just 2% a year over this period, the gains of the bottom 90% would be negative. In 2007, average annual incomes of the top 1 percent of households were 42 times greater than in¬comes of the bottom 90 percent, and incomes of the top 0.1 percent were 220 times greater. This is an increase of 1400% and 4700% respectively since 1979.

Work Disability in Small Firms Chapter II
This chapter of an ongoing dissertation reviews the literature most directly pertinent to the methods and problem statement from the previous chapter. While the analytical literature and official statistics describing workers with disabilities in the U.S. is vast and expanding, very few studies report statistics on workers with disabilities by firm size, and very few report statistics on workers with disabilities below the State level, whereas this dissertation tests hypotheses about workers with disabilities at the metropolitan statistical area level, in large and small firms. Therefore, the problem statement that there is a lack of information about this population is upheld here in Chapter II, and the results if interesting are located within the existing literature, from which this investigation draws methods and precedent.
