What is Political Parties?

Political parties are formal organizations that seek to gain and exercise governmental power by nominating candidates, mobilizing voters, and shaping public policy. The subject appears across political science, American government, and international studies courses because parties serve as the central link between citizens and the state. Students are drawn to the topic because it connects abstract theories of representation and power to concrete, observable conflicts between groups like Republicans and Democrats, making it analytically rich and immediately relevant to contemporary events.

Essays on this topic take several distinct approaches. Many focus on the American context, examining the structure and current condition of the two major parties and how they interact with the electoral process, including voting behavior and candidate nomination. Others adopt a comparative or international lens, exploring party systems in different countries and contexts such as Lebanese politics or the dynamics of host-country governance. A recurring analytical angle involves distinguishing political parties from related actors like interest groups, clarifying how each institution seeks to influence government and policy in different ways.

A strong essay on political parties begins with a focused thesis that identifies a specific argument — about party function, decline, polarization, or comparative effectiveness — rather than simply describing what parties are. Evidence drawn from electoral outcomes, policy records, and governmental structure tends to carry the most weight. One common pitfall is conflating description with analysis: explaining what Republicans and Democrats believe without arguing why those differences matter structurally or historically produces a summary rather than a genuine academic argument.

Expatriate Debrief While in Berlin, I Visited
While in Berlin, I visited a large art museum where, as in most parts of Europe, I was surrounded by people from all over the world. Docents guided small groups of people through the museum, talking about the art in the native language of the groups of people. A group of Japanese people were guided by a quiet, polite, and diminutive middle-aged woman. I don't understand Japanese so I couldn't effectively eavesdrop—but it wouldn't have mattered if I did because she was so soft spoken—her group members pressed close around her—that I wouldn't have been able to hear what she said without closing the physical gap in an obvious manner. The group of Spanish-speaking visitors enthusiastically gave eye contact to those around them, gave way to others as they moved about the room, and often linked arms or touched the hands of people in their group. A large, loud-spoken woman stood well away from the German-speaking group. Her group members spread out in front of whatever work of art they were admiring, such that, they took up three times the space they needed to accomplish their viewing and their discussion. The German docent seemed unaware that there were other visitors in the room, her guttural phrases bouncing off the uncarpeted floors and the bare ceilings, in an intrusive staccato. This is not an exaggeration, nor is it meant to be stereotypical. National personality is regularly manifested, even in these days of a fast, flat world.

Comparing excellent and flawed leadership in business, politics, and family contexts
Effective leadership is hardly a matter of chance or luck. It constitutes some sound competencies and traits which every leader must either possess naturally or acquire during his career. Leaders are expected to have major essential competencies in five areas namely, Analytical, Positional, Personal, Communication and Organizational. Not every leader may possess all these but they are widely desired based on literature review and hence a leader lacking any of these might face serious problems.
