An Understand of How Science Is Perceived in the Public Through Four Article Reviews

This paper attempts to compare and contrast two articles which looked at the issue of gay marriage from different view points. The first was a quantitative study that looked at people's attitudes regarding the practice and who more for and who against. The second wass a research article that offered a reasoned solution.

In the first instance, differences must be made between the various faces of the ‘crowd' and operational definitions must be arrived at. As Intro to Sociology defines it: Crowds are large numbers of people in the same space at the same time. (http://freebooks.uvu.edu/SOC1010/index.php/ch19-collective-behaviors.html) The ‘crowd' itself is divided into various characteristics. There is, for instance, the Conventional Crowd which a crowd that gathers for a typical event that is more routine in nature. Then you have the Expressive Crowd that gathers to express an emotion (e.g. Woodstock; the Million Man March; or the 9-11 Memorial Services). And finally you have Solidaristic Crowds that gather as an act of social unity (e.g., Breast Cancer awareness conventions). All of these are non-violent and mostly predicable in their outcome. Other categories of crowds are the emotionally charged so-called ‘Acting crowds' that have a goal or objective that they are willing to defend. Many of these develop into riots and strikes (e.g. he 1991 Los Angeles Riots) and their unpredictable nature can make them a danger to the larger community.

Public policy is an important aspect of a well-functioning government. It has to come from somewhere, and many of the policies that are set start out as ideas that are then used by political agents in order to affect change. People benefit from these ideas - provided they are good ones - but not every idea is one with which others are satisfied. This results in a lot of political wrangling.

Capital punishment is presently one of the most debated topics as a consequence of the mixed opinions that the masses have concerning the practice. While some believe that the procedure is an essential concept of society, others consider that it is immoral and that it stands against the idea of civilization. When looking at things from a certain perspective, it appears that it would be wrong for someone to support capital punishment and to appreciate values promoted in the contemporary society at the same time. However, the truth is that society can sometimes be particularly cruel and that cold blood is needed in certain circumstances. There are some people who do not deserve to be a part of the social order and the only solution for society to remain healthy is for them to be put to death.
