What is Politics?

Politics is one of the most expansive subjects in academic study, examined across disciplines including political science, history, sociology, international relations, and even literary criticism. It concerns how power is acquired, exercised, and contested within governments, institutions, and societies. The subject attracts essay assignments precisely because it touches nearly every dimension of human life — from how laws are made to how language itself can be used as a tool of governance, as George Orwell argued in his influential analysis of political rhetoric. Students encounter politics in courses ranging from comparative government to ethics, and the field rewards careful attention to both abstract theory and concrete real-world outcomes.

The papers archived on this topic reflect a wide range of approaches. Some take a country or regional case-study angle, examining the domestic and foreign politics of places like Estonia or Brazil, or tracing the role of drug policy across Latin America. Others are comparative or historical, such as work on race and the 2008 presidential election campaign or the relationship between the Lutheran church and political authority in Germany. Several papers focus on policy and institutional mechanics, including campaign finance and its effect on election outcomes, while others explore the intersection of politics with religion, gender equality, and program evaluation.

A strong essay on a political topic begins with a clearly scoped thesis that identifies a specific relationship — between power and policy, ideology and outcome, or institution and change. Evidence drawn from government records, historical events, and documented policy decisions tends to carry the most weight. One common pitfall is treating politics as a backdrop rather than the central analytical subject, which causes arguments to remain vague rather than demonstrating how power actually shapes the issue under examination.

Intelligence agency abuses from the Church Committee to the War on Terror
The Church Committee Investigations which began in 1974 after the Watershed Scandal in President Nixon's administration found that intelligence agencies had unlimited executive power. The committee found that intelligence agencies abused this power and harassed and disrupted targeted groups and individuals, spied on citizens, assassination plots, manipulation and infiltration of businesses and media. Recommendations made by the Church Committee in the 1970s concerning intelligence agencies have been overlooked. As President Nixon's administration gave more executive power to intelligence agencies during his reign, so did President Bush. Intelligence agencies acquired executive authority after 9/11 are founded on the rhetoric of the war on terrorism, finding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and identifying the link between Iraq and Al-Qaida. The agencies have carried out executive authority of unwarranted surveillance at home and abroad, arresting and detaining citizens and groups in secret prisons abroad, using enhanced interrogation, and denying detainees legal representation. It is evident these executive power has made intelligence agencies intractable after 9/11 as they were in the post cold war era. This executive power has made intelligence checkpoints like the congressional oversight committees, FISA court and the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act invaluable.

American imperialism and globalization in Smith's analysis
There are many countries that perceive the United States of America as an example of imperialism. There are many cultures that adamantly resist western culture, western practices, and western ideals. They are enraged and repulsed by the thought of assimilating things, cultural objects, or systems from the west. Generally speaking, there are two sides to the debate regarding globalization. The debate is simple: one argument is that globalization is good; the other argument is the globalization is detrimental. Smith eloquently argues and fervently demonstrates the path and the agenda of American imperialism and the role of globalization in American imperialism. The End Game of Globalization tracks the course and final trajectory of America's plan of globalization. The paper provides a context within which to consider and evaluate Smith's opus, as well as provide a brief summary of the themes, points, and methods.

Occupy Wall Street: inequality, activism, and social movement analysis
Martin Luther's involvement in sixteenth century's Christian controversy brought forward the Protestant Reformation. His teachings generated a new Christian branch that has come to be one of the ideology's most important beliefs. In comparison to Catholic law, Lutheranism promotes the idea that the church is not necessarily one of the most important institutions making it possible for people to connect with God. Moreover, the ideology encourages individuals to focus on developing a more personal relationship with God, as this respective connection can apparently be even stronger as long as the person is determined and as long as he or she concentrates on faith.
