What is Position?

Position as an academic topic spans a wide range of disciplines, from business administration and public policy to nursing, education, and personal development. Courses in organizational behavior, healthcare management, political science, and professional writing all prompt students to examine what it means to hold, argue for, or strategically occupy a position — whether that refers to a job role, a policy stance, a formal argument, or a place within an institution. The topic is academically interesting precisely because it sits at the intersection of identity, authority, knowledge, and strategy, requiring writers to think carefully about how individuals and organizations establish and justify where they stand.

The papers collected here take notably varied approaches. Some are analytical, examining how organizations and companies leverage employee experience and satisfaction to strengthen their competitive position. Others are policy-oriented, addressing issues in education, nursing practice, or public administration, including cultural diversity in nursing and the role of strategic planning in public policy. Still others are personal and reflective, asking writers to assess their own professional success, goals, and future plans. Case analyses and reviews — including examinations of leadership models in healthcare and the effects of deregulation on global finance — round out the range with applied, evidence-based approaches.

A strong essay on this topic begins with a clearly scoped thesis that specifies whose position is being examined and in what context — avoiding the common pitfall of treating "position" so broadly that the argument loses focus. Evidence drawn from organizational data, policy documents, professional guidelines, or concrete personal experience tends to carry the most weight. Writers should connect their specific case or argument back to broader principles, whether about leadership, institutional design, or professional identity, to demonstrate analytical depth beyond simple description.

Canadian Social Policy the Title
Canadian Social Policy The title of the article by Gerard Boismenu and Peter Graefe provides a strong hint as to the intended message and impact of this piece. "Tool Belt" reads like something is being forced into position rather than by legislative cooperation, or that something needs mechanical manipulation; and "Attempts to Rebuild Social Policy Leadership," suggest that there is no current leadership (Boismenu, et al, 2004, p. 71). In addition, a phrase in the first sentence offers the reader the sense that this paper is going to take the Canadian government to task: "unilateral action" in reference to any government policy reads as arbitrary, undemocratic, and is not what parliamentary leadership is supposed to be about.

LSI Assessment Lifestyle Inventory Assessment
Personal Thinking Styles The LSI Assessment was an illuminating exercise and for the most part is congruent with my own self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses as they relate to managerial and leadership behaviors. My top style is Affiliative (99% percentile) followed by Self-Actualizing (97% percentile). My greatest limiting factor is Approval (95% percentile). My two greatest styles are exemplified in how I choose to organize and manage student and work projects, looking to ensure everyone has a voice in the project and feels a strong sense of ownership for its value. I believe that affiliation is stronger than power or ordering people to do their jobs. If employees are completely dedicated to the tasks internally they'll push themselves harder and further than anyone could do through the use of transactional leadership techniques (Arond-Thomas, 2004). Possibly given the many jobs I've had earlier in my life that were very much managed through a power-based approach to management, I still resent leaders who are autocratic and rely just on their position to literally push employees around. While power is celebrated in many management and leadership texts and the popular media, I think it is the ugliest form of leadership. It is the lazy way to get work done as a manager. It is far more difficult, and rewarding, to get employees to believe in the vision of a business and feel they "belong" and "fit in". I feel these two values are extremely important for any employee, including myself when working for a business or on a student project. These are the values and precepts that also underscore transformational leadership and the ability to make lasting, long-term and very significant changes to any organization's direction and ability to compete (Gurley, Wilson, 2011). Having had to at times participate in virtual learning and working teams, I've found that affiliative leadership skills work well for mitigating misunderstandings and breaking down the barriers between students and employees. Affiliative leadership is an excellent trait for managing and leading virtual teams as well (Gurley, Wilson, 2011).
