Bible "That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises," (Hebrews 6:12). The promises referred to in the Bible include spiritual gifts like wisdom, and also the gifts of material abundance and fecundity. The Bible teaches that laziness, or sloth, is incompatible with wisdom or success. Moreover, the Bible teaches that only foolish people are lazy and slothful, because they allow themselves to be distracted by desires. The person who is distracted does not work, and when a person does not work, he or she cannot eat. "The desire of the sluggard kills him, for his hands refuse to labor," (Proverbs 21:25). Hands that refuse to labor are naturally hands that cannot provide food to sustain the body, let alone spiritual nourishment for the soul.

The potential destructiveness of laziness is expressed in Proverbs 18:9: "Whoever is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys." Laziness can kill a person in a number of different ways, such as via poverty or foolish actions. To combat laziness, a person needs to ignore desires and simply work.
Hard work begets rich rewards for the body and the soul. "The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied," (Proverbs 13:4). In fact, it can be surmised that foolishness and desire can be eradicated through the healing power of hard work. The person who is willing to work hard creates riches to sustain both the body and the soul: "the hand of the diligent makes rich," (Proverbs 10:4). Working hard can help channel a person's energy away from the foolish desires, leading a person toward spiritual wisdom and riches.…
