The oleander originated in northern Africa, the eastern Mediterranean Basin, and Southeast Asia. As a nonnative plant, the oleander has had little difficult in adapting. Indeed since the oleander is such a sturdy plant, once a plant has taken root it is very difficult to remove it completely. Because of its high adaptability, the plant can take over once it has been planted in an area, killing off the native plants if it is environmentally unequivalent.

Plants can survive extreme heats and humidity such as in Florida or other parts of the Gulf Coast. It can also survive extreme cold with temperatures up to fifteen degrees below freezing. The plant can survive and thrive in the most arid of locations to the wettest of climates as well.
Many towns utilize the plant in landscaping, planting hedges of oleander to block houses from main streets. It is useful for this purpose because it is such a hearty plant. Along Interstate 4 in Orlando, Florida, a huge segment of roadway is landscaped with multiple colors of oleander which has been statistically proven to lessen the stress of commuters when they become stuck in traffic.
