" (Goettler & Gordon, 1) and according to the research produced above in the source by GS, AMD actually saw its market share decline across the same sample period. This denotes the relatively monolithic nature of the microprocessor industry. This also denotes an extremely attractive field from Intel's perspective. Horn (2009) advises using Porter's Five Forces as a way of understanding Intel's role within its market. Here, Horn notes that "Michael Porter's five forces analysis determines the attractiveness of an industry based on bargaining power of the supplier and buyer, threat of substitutes, threat of new entrants, and rivalry among existing competitors. In the microprocessor industry, buyer bargaining power, new entrants, and rivalry are all strong forces while supplier bargaining power and threat of substitutes are weak forces." (Horn, 1)

It is thus that we consider those forces which are acknowledged as determinant in the industry. Horn points to buyer bargaining power as an important area of consideration which Intel mastered...

Associating its name with consumer-demanded quality, Intel would force buyers such as Dell, HP and Apple to ultimately eschew its competitors. With respect to rivalry, its market-share is singular. For new entrants, the greatest hope is that the presentation of innovation to the industry will alert Intel's interest and that it will make an offer to purchase the innovative technology in question. With the inception of Intel into use with new media products such as the Apple's line of iPods, iPhones and iPads, there is little rivalry to speak of.

The venture was risky but paid off brilliantly and Intel was poised to launch the next generation 80486 microprocessor well before IBM could come to the table. Moreover, Microsoft began developing operating systems compatible with successive generations of microprocessor technology. Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC) processors posed a brief threat to Intel's glowing successes during the 1980s.
