¶ … true experiment for the following reasons. First, there were four treatment groups. Confounding variables have been controlled by selecting like research subjects that had a sedentary lifestyle, an average age of 37 and an average body mass index of just below 33. Random assignment was used to equate groups before they received any treatment. The concept being studied is exercise. The conceptual definition of the independent variable (IV) is degree of exercise measured by duration and intensity.

There were four levels of the IV including 30 minutes of moderate exercise, 30 minutes of vigorous exercise, 60 minutes of moderate exercise and 60 minutes of vigorous exercise. Moderate exercise included leisurely walking, hiking or swimming while vigorous exercise included brisk walking or biking and swimming. All participants were placed on the same diet. The dependent variable (DV) is the amount of weight loss after one year. This was an experimental study seeking to establish a cause-and-effect relationship by examining whether changes in the levels of the IV systematically affected weight loss.

Conditions of causality were met. It's not likely that in the absence of the controlled diet and exercise regimen that the women would have lost weight. The one year duration of the study certainly seems like a reasonable time to conclude that the exercise regimen contributed to the reported weight losses. And, it's well-known that weight loss in healthy people is attributable to diet and exercise. Based on the results, exercise activity is correlated with weight loss. Weight was measured on a ratio scale.

Weight is a ratio variable because it is meaningful to say that eight pounds is twice as much as four pounds and numbers can be averaged. The hypothesis that exercise activity impacts weight loss was supported. On average, women who exercised vigorously for 60 minutes lost the most weight, 20 pounds. Those who exercised moderately for 60 minutes lost slightly more than 18 pounds. Those who exercised moderately for 30 minutes lost nearly 14 pounds, while women who exercised vigorously for 30 minutes lost slightly more than 15 pounds. The groups were equal prior to treatment.

As mentioned, like participants were selected based on sedentary lifestyle, an average age of 37 and an average body mass index of just below 33. And, members were randomly assigned to one of.
