Computer Based Information Systems are not only a luxury, but in today's business setting they are a necessity. The amount and types of information required to perform standard tasks has increased exponentially and will continue to increase in the future. Computer Based Information Systems allow managers to divide the information into functional groups within an organization. A CBIS can allow a manager to quickly analyze past data, present data and use this information to make predictions about future trends. CBIS can be customized to meet the specific needs of the organization. For instance, information can be divided into Human Resources, Financial Information, Marketing, and Manufacturing Information, or other categories as the needs dictate. The system can be used to give other groups access to certain information or to deny certain groups access to information.

Reports can be generated in a standard format. They can be generated automatically according to a set schedule, or special reports can be generated in certain circumstances. These same reports can be generated manually, however, the CBIS can accomplish these tasks much more quickly and accurately, which in the end saves the company money by way of time spent. Reports can be generated which show data graphically, using trend lines, or in a variety of ways, which highlight differences from the norm, trends, or make other comparisons.
Reports can give a snapshot of the current situation or show how the data changes over time. CBIS systems can be used to do simulations and make predictions under certain conditions. Variables can be changed to measure their effect on an outcome. By changing one variable at a time, managers can systematically arrive at the best solution to the problem.
