Colonies: The First Discussion Presents

Colonies: The first discussion presents an analysis regarding the nature and character of the four U.S. colonies in the new world. The analysis traces the similarities and differences in the character and nature between the colonies. I agree with the conclusion that Virginia Colony was the least desirable and harshest settlement of the four while Massachusetts was its opposite. In addition to the issues raised in the discussion, Virginia was considered the harshest settlement because it was seemingly characterized by an irrational model to manpower and shipments of provisions.

Actually, the colony's president reported to Virginia Company regarding the need to adopt a more rational dimension to manpower and future shipments of provisions (Smith, n.d.). Consequently, Jamestown was relatively similar to Virginia because of the numerous problems experienced in the settlement. Massachusetts was a completely different colony from Virginia and Jamestown because of the total devotion to religious beliefs that guided the settlement process. In contrast, the nature and character of Plymouth Colony remains unclear because the settlement basically provided shelter to Dutch settlers.

Maryland was also a better colony as compared to Virginia because of the people efforts to contribute to a better settlement through various trade initiatives (Aslop, n.d.). The second discussion examines the most significant similarities between the four colonies despite of the evident differences in their nature and character. As mentioned in the previous paper, these colonies were similar in relation to their religious beliefs and the struggles that characterized their inception.

While I agree with the issues raised in the discussion, not all colonies exhibited outright commitment and devotion to religious principles and beliefs. The struggles in each of the colonies during initial establishment were mainly dependent on the specific focus of the settlement. The other similarities that are not included in the discussion include the populations of these colonies being made up of people from different regions and dependence on trade for economic gain.

This discussion is followed by an evaluation of the differences between the four major colonies in the new world with regards to their nature and character. As highlighted in the previous paper, these colonies differed in terms of the establishment process and major events within the settlement. For instance the establishment of Massachusetts was for the preservation of Puritan values, Jamestown for economic gains, Maryland for expansion of trade, and Plymouth for providing an alternative settlement to disgruntled Dutch people.

However, the author of discussion failed to state that the differences in establishment and events that took place in the colony were linked to the specific population in the settlement. In this case, Massachusetts sought to become a city on the hill because it was occupied by Puritans with strong religious beliefs (Winthrop, n.d.). Plymouth faced many hardships and aimed at producing profit for investors because its population was disgruntled people from Holland (Bradford, n.d.).

While the origin of Maryland's settlers is not indicated in the article, trade became the center stage of the population's activities because of their focus on the existence of numerous commodities in the colony. Jamestown experienced significant difficulties because of the poor leadership, form of authority, and organization in the colony. I agree with the final discussion because it basically provides an overview of the issues presented in the previous discussions. The overview discusses the nature and character of each colony with regards to their similarities and differences.
