The fact is that the reality of American government is moving towards authoritarianism and an emphasis on declining freedoms. As a result, it is completely necessary to reinstitute checks into the current democratic process. Without institutionalized limitations on the actions of government, there would be no way for the government to act in such a way as to extend their basic power and infrastructure. The most important lesson of these two books is that freedom cannot be confused with safety, and that the government's attempts to scare us into believing that they are one and the same must not succeed. For if they do then we are in effect sacrificing our freedoms.
