Last reviewed: April 10, 2003 ~3 min read

Crop circles have eluded scientists and investigators since their emergence. Anyone who has ever seen one has the same question in mind - how did they get here? Some have sought to deceive the scientific community by creating fake crop circles with the use of boards and strings. These 'hoaxers' have claimed responsibility for all existing crop circles. Is it possible that hoaxers are responsible for one of the most mysterious phenomena of the modern age?

Crop circles are a profound mystery. Their designs range from simple to intricate. Their explanations range from natural to supernatural. Some scientists believe they are created by extra-terrestrials as a method of communication or as 'road maps'. Other theories suggest that they are a natural occurrence or even a supernatural occurrence caused by spirits.

Interestingly enough, there are several peculiar documented events that occur at crop circle cite. First, there have been many U.F.O. sightings in the vicinity of crop circles. Secondly, the circles have also been known to give off high positive radio interference readings, which do not occur naturally. Most importantly, crops are bent in such as way as to not break their stalks.

Another explanation is that they are man-made. According to Andrews, some crop circles are hoaxed. Hoaxes are easily identifiable because the stalks of the crops affected are broken. Hoaxed crop circle making was made popular by prankster artists who liked public attention. Most of these hoaxers allege that all circles are made using boards and strings. (154-169)
