¶ … Achieving the Diversity Commitment" by the Board of Trustees of the Community College System covers how the California Community College system is attempting to manage the growing diversity of students in their system. It includes a "Pledge to Action" to attain better diversity, and spells out goals to achieve this pledge. In addition, the commitment also asks local boards to act on diversity in accordance with the statewide pledge, and discusses how students can succeed with the help of the state and local system's support.

The Board goes on to list a variety of ways local systems can ensure student success and achievement, both in school and continuing in the workplace. The schools hope to create an atmosphere where students can not only learn new skills and hone others, but also transfer these skills to the workplace, thereby creating greater economic development for the students and the community.

In addition, the Trustees encourage schools to practice diversity in the classroom, but also in the administration, faculty, and staff, so they can "provide for outreach and support for diverse students" (Trustees 9). The Trustees go on to recommend hiring and Human Resource practices, student recruitment methods, and specific types of diversity educational practices and programs. Clearly, diversity is important to the Trustees of the California Community College System, and they are attempting to pass this critical need for diversity on to all the state and local administrations.

This pledge seems to incorporate all areas of diversity that community colleges might anticipate. However, it seems that while the Board of Trustees are quite clear about the need for educational diversity, this document might not translate that need effectively. In places, it reads like any other bureaucratic document that.
