Drug administration is the manner in which all kinds of medicine are given to patients. Drug administration is a vital clinical procedure because the manner in which medicine is administered to a patient highly determines whether the patient gets better of worsens. Henceforth, despite the procedure being common, it is more important than people think and hence should be carefully implemented.

In order to ensure the correct procedure of medical administration and reduce medication errors, the five main rights of medical administration were introduced. The five guiding principles otherwise commonly referred to as rights were introduced not only to reduce medical errors and their adverse effects but also to protect the nurses administering the medication since it is their job to ensure perfect administration of drugs to patients. Thus, whenever a patient suffered from effects of wrong drug administration, the nurses were blamed whether or not it was their fault.
The five rights are: the right medicine, the right patient, the right route of administration, the right dose and the right time of administration. These five rights are considered the goals of the drug administration procedure. In fact, all nurses should make sure they always follow these rights especially the right drug and the right patient. It is because, the administration of the wrong drug is the worst and most dangerous mistake there is in drug administration. Thus, to facilitate proper medical services, all medical practitioners must ensure they follow all the five rights alongside all the other right medical procedures. On this there is no room for error.
