Pursue a Major in Economics.

¶ … pursue a major in Economics. I have always believed that it is important to study subjects that relate to the way the world works. Doing so allows you to better interpret the world around you. Moreover, knowledge of the subjects that drive the world today opens up a wide range of career possibilities. I see how so many people are suffering the effects of the current economic downturn and I realize that in many cases, these people simply do not understand the current situation, and were therefore helpless to avoid it.

Indeed, the current financial crisis is one of the most important reasons why I want to study economics. I find the story uniquely compelling. I took it upon myself to read about the issue, and was surprised at the depth and complexity of the issue. There seems to be such a wide range of variables that have come together to create the current crisis, yet in hindsight the development of the crisis seems so obvious. Perhaps with greater understanding of economics, situations like this can be prevented in the future.

I believe that knowledge is power. For me, this current economic crisis sparked a shift in my thinking. I now see myself investing in a career in economics. The knowledge I expect to gain from my studies will provide the backdrop for the development of a long and prosperous career. Moreover, I hope that one day I will be able to make a contribution to my country, in helping to make economic concepts understood. I hate to see so many of my fellow Americans struggling, twisted by forces they do not have any control over. The future I see for myself has me working within the context of those forces to achieve great success for myself and for those around me.

I have built to this point a track record of strong achievement. Now that I have been inspired to pursue a major in Economics, I feel that I will be able to make a stronger contribution to the campus. I expect to excel. I demand a high level of performance from myself and as a result I know that I will bring a lot to classroom discussions.

As a member of the campus community, I have contributed in many ways. I have been active my classes, and worked with my fellow students to make sure that we all achieve a high level of success. I have played an active role in school social life, and look forward to making more such contributions in the future.

The exposure I have gained thus far to economic concepts in my coursework has also contributed to my interest in the subject. I have a strong orientation to systems, so piecing together the wide range of economic variables in order to better understand the world in which we live and do business is both challenging and rewarding for me. I have excelled when given the opportunity to work with this subject in the past, and I look forward to continuing that traditional of excellence in the pursuit of an Economics major.
