Nursing: Evidence-Based Practice

Evidence-based practice helps the new nurses to gain expertise that the previous scholar has verified within their current practice for positive patient outcomes. However, to ensure quality patient care, communication plays an integral role in disseminating factual knowledge. This paper aims to provide the databases and the evaluation criteria that would be useful for managing the selected diagnosis for a patient while supervising new nurses.

As a baccalaureate-prepared nurse supervising the clinical staff nurses, communication needs to be transparent to make collaboration hassle-free. The nursing practice scenario is about one of the three under-supervision nurses coming to me inquiring about an unknown diagnosis: sepsis for urinary tract infection. It is realized that for patient-centered care, a training method has been introduced by the University of California, Los General Hospital as a revision of the CICARE communication model via Chineseization called the “six-step standard communication process” (Geng et al., 2022). It entails connecting, introducing, communicating, asking, responding, and exiting as the key six steps for rapid communication and higher levels of professionalism in health services. It is especially valuable for creating patient-nurse harmony and trust.

Active listening is expected from the under-supervision nurse from the mentoring nurse for diagnosis-based research application. Learning would be enhanced through interacting continuously. Empathy, respect, and patience in listening and deploying what is learned through evidence-based research, personal introduction to the patients, and explaining the diagnosis would help respond to the health crisis with polite communication tactics.

Since the hospital is known as a leader in education and has an online library with access to several medical research databases, the under-supervision nurses would be guided to search the resources online. The quest to locate a piece of reliable evidence would be assisted by the head nurse for which, who would guide the staff nurse to go into the facility and look for the resource online. Severely online resources such as websites, journals, guidelines, and government and medical institutes’ publications would be extracted online.

Evaluating online resources and their credibility is a concern for giving patients the right quality care for positive patient outcomes. 5 W’s model, also known as six journalist questions, is used for evaluating online sources for the easily available online sources. They include what, who, where, when, why, and how (Elmwood, 2020). ‘What’ would help understand what type of source is the online article; is it from a website, a journal, or another source. ‘Who’ would help discern who the author of the source is. ‘When’ would tell about the publication date and whether it is outdated. ‘Where’ would let the finder know where it was published: a magazine, website, journal, etc. ‘Why’ would elucidate for what purpose the article was written and whether it suits the finder’s needs, especially of the nurses to learn about sepsis (the diagnosis) that she was unaware of. ‘How’ would also explain the same issue whether the existence of the source answers the finder’s question and whether the viewpoints gained from the source are evidence-based that could be later integrated into the practice. The health-related information is crucial in directing the patients’ health behavior; hence, the information obtained must be trustworthy for promptly making appropriate decisions (Sbaff & Rowley, 2017).

Based on the above-discussed model, the five credible online sources are PubMed, NCBI, Diagnostics, Journal of Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment, and Tandfoline database. The first is the most reliable, followed by the other based on their subsequent credibility levels. The reason for selecting these five sources is that they have peer-reviewed, open-access for, full-text articles. They have been approved by scholars and medical professionals with the latest information on different diagnoses and practical, evidence-based solutions when the patient faces such a problem.
