The zeitgeist that The Great Gatsby was written in was extremely influential to F. Scott Fitzgerald's tale, which is undeniably American and an excellent example of the Lost Generation of writers with which he is typically associated with. Both written and set during the Roaring Twenties as the country still basked in its World War I victory, enjoying the care free years that preceded the Great Depression, the novel depicts a tainted, twisted love story involving a bootlegger, Jay Gatsby, his first true love, Daisy, and her husband, as it were. The story is narrated by Nick Carraway, Daisy's cousin and an inadvertent friend of Gatsby's due to his meeting with her.

The somewhat unusual courtship between Gatsby and Daisy is largely accentuated by a series of sprawling parties that the former has at his mansion. In many respects, this tale is about how the luxuries of money can supplant just about everything in the U.S. -- previous social standings, romantic failures, immigration -- except for true respect and, true friendship. Gatsby and Nick learn this lesson the hard way as during their flourishing romance a tragic encounter takes place that leaves a woman dead, and Gatsby is mistaken as the reason why. Both men originated from the Midwest and journey to New York to seek their fortune. There is somewhat of a duality in the fate that awaits the pair, with the primary difference between the two that Nick remains alive to witness the moral of this tale.
The most salient aspect about this particular novel is Fitzgerald's prose, with contains a vibrancy and knack for detail that appears far more poetic than any other type of literature. To that end, reading this novel is a sheer delight for the simple fact that the passages contain an effervescence and diction that makes the experience highly enjoyable. Although there are several authors who have managed this feat (nearly all of them belonging to the upper echelon of novelists, such as Edith Wharton and her work in The House of Mirth), what distinguishes Fitzgerald's writing style from most others is his wicked, oftentimes sardonic sense of humor.
