Healthcare Bill Ref: The Health Care bill signed by Andrew M. Cuomo -- Governor for Treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder

I wish to state that the legislation must have come in earlier than this. Autism is a condition that requires medication and care for children and the legislation passed by the Governor Albany, NY on November 1, 2011 requires that the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder be brought under the health care coverage. This is a laudable step in New York and it will be a blessing to such families with autistic children to afford the expensive health care costs. The law now makes it mandatory for the health insurance companies to provide coverage for treatment of autism spectrum disorders, and the companies however may resort to 'deductibles, co-pays, and coinsurance consistent with those imposed on other benefits.' Discussing the law Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said that the bill will provide for diagnosis and treatment removing the financial constraints and thanked "Senator Fuschillo and Assemblyman Morelle for sponsoring this much-needed legislation." Law will come to effect from November 1, 2012 for all policies renewed or issued thereafter. (Cuomo, 2011)

Autism spectrum disorders are found in one in every 110 children and New York, there ate approximately 30,000 children identified with an ASD. The bill is result of the drafting work of Dean G. Skelos, Senator Fuschillo and Senator McDonald. The bill was seen as a means of detecting the autism spectrum disorders by Dr. Nirav Shah, Commissioner of the Department of Health. The bill was also welcomed by many luminaries like John B. King, Jr., State Education Commissioner and Paul A. Hamlin, MD, President, Medical Society of the State of New York. (Cuomo, 2011)

The problem with the condition is that the autistic individual is not going to have a normal life is lost to autistic behavior. If a person was unfortunate to be born with autism it is the duty of all and other humans have to help them along in life, because there is no complete cure for autism. In my opinion this may cause drain on the care givers, especially the family of the Autistic individual. The important fiscal problem will be apportioning portion of the family income into…
