¶ … controversy regarding cats and dogs and their place in society at the moment, as there are animal lovers who go through great efforts to control their populations and make sure that they are not ignored and as there are individuals who feel that it is wrong to keep an animal as a pet because of the problems that it brings on. Society's attitudes toward dogs and cats vary on account of factors like cultural values and personal opinions. They range from individuals who would do everything in their power to protect these animals to persons who see nothing wrong with eating them.

The Western society largely perceives dogs and cats as animals that are an active part of this community and that need to be provided with a series of rights in order for the masses to gain a more complex understanding concerning the role these beings play. The bond between people and animals has come to be especially stronger during recent years as people acknowledged that pet are essential when considering the feelings that they induce in their owners and in others. While cats and dogs initially had the purpose of protecting the household from thieves and unwanted animals, people gradually came to accept them as a part of their lives and even as members of their families. These animals responded by being loyal and by making it possible for their owners to feel happy in circumstances when they would normally feel sad.

Hurricane Katrina has had a devastating effect on the U.S. And on the world as a whole. Even with this, it also made it possible for people to emphasize their moral character and their determination to help every soul that was in need of assistance at the time. IFAW's Animal Rescue team went through great efforts during the period in attempt to save and relocate animals. This organization cooperated with the authorities and with the masses as they went door-to-door in search of owners who lost their pets. In addition to making it possible for people to understand the importance of having animal rescue organizations involved in saving animals consequent to catastrophes, the hurricane also enabled society to understand more about the importance of neutering. With most of the animals that escaped after the hurricane not being neutered or spayed, cat and dog populations experienced rapid growth (Hurricane Katrina Animal Rescue: IFAW Saves Dogs and Cats).

Overpopulation is a significant problem when considering cats and dogs and both animal lovers and those who are indifferent toward them are likely to agree to this issue. Large amounts of finances are being poured into animal shelters and people are largely responsible for the fact that overpopulation exists in the first place. As a consequence, it is very important for the masses to understand that they need to take care that their animals do not produce unwanted litters and that they do not contribute to the number of homeless pets (Anchel, 50).
