Humanitarian Assistance is an extremely vital profession that is worth exploring. My intentions for pursuing a Master's degree in this field stem from the simple fact that I have always believed that the life of humanitarian aid professionals deeply satisfy a sense of self-worth and fulfillment. One of my utmost intentions for being involved in this field is to learn how to help others less fortunate no matter where they reside. I have always wanted to understand how people could be helped out of tough situations and taught to become self-reliant once they had been helped. I understand there are many levels of work in this field ranging from disaster relief to refugee assistance.
My second intention in pursuing this endeavor is to better understand and be well aware of the plight of various peoples from around the world. I feel that when one gains such an understanding about the work in humanitarian assistance, one starts to obtain a broader knowledge about the world beyond our borders. One comes to better appreciate all the freedoms and material luxuries that we often take for granted here. Finally, I intend to gain a sense of appreciation for myself in utilizing my capabilities towards helping others.
My motivation towards desiring to pursue a career in this field was based on my profound admiration for its professionals. I had always been in awe of how such professionals dedicated so much of their time, energy, and resources towards helping people in even the most remote and devastated parts of the world. Often times they would even work under dangerous circumstances, despite the fact that they could be made to sacrifice their lives in the process.
I felt that such individuals could have easily just pursued careers in different professions or could have chosen aid projects to work on within their own countries. Instead, they chose to pursue their endeavors abroad; I believe such people must possess a genuine concern for improving the welfare of others. I myself have always shared such concerns throughout life; thus I have come to know that humanitarian assistance best expresses such concerns.
The necessity and importance of humanitarian assistance has become more apparent than ever today. The well-publicized situations in countries like Iraq and Afghanistan have served as constant reminders of the suffering people experience during times of war. Recent news has covered the devastating effects of the tsunamis that struck nine countries throughout Asia and Africa, killing more than 20,000 people. Many other regions of the world continue to suffer from hunger, disease, and oppression, even if they don't garner as much public attention as the events mentioned above. This serves to illustrate the importance of humanitarian assistance. Without it, people would be left to fend for themselves under dangerous circumstances.
