Role and Improving Management Performance: Nurse Shift

Abstract

Managers are critical factors of success within an organization. Improving work performance begins with the leader in the management team and management practices embraced over time. Besides, establishing the right management practices will enable employees to be committed towards working on the objectives laid by management. In this study, I have shown how understanding my role as a nurse shift leader will be critical in delivering my services appropriately. Increased levels of organizational commitment among the members would boost their performance.

Management plays a key role towards improving performance in an organization. In the 21st century organizational setting, management is fundamental in ensuring that there is a high performance in an organization. Organizations are investing in developing the right management systems, people so that they boost the employee performance, and foster the realization of departmental objectives. This has become a critical thing in enhancing employee performance in the workplace. In this study, I have focused on various issues of management and the role that I, as the Nurse Shift Leader, will play in boosting the performance of employees under me in adult intensive care unit and the entire hospital.

Managers have a role to play to improve performance in an organization. In fact, all the success of an organization begins and ends with the form of management and style adopted. Effective organizations are the ones that have embraced fundamental measures of boosting the quality of management in an effort to boost performance across all the sectors within the organization. In this context, I will invest heavily in developing the right management practices geared towards boosting the overall performance in employees within the unit. I will also take the initiative to develop the right management cultures that would motivate them to embrace the initiatives in order to boost their performance in the adult intensive care unit (Armstrong, 2006).

Understanding the Role as Nurse Shift Leader in Improving Performance

My role as a Nurse Shift Leader is to improve employee performance in my unit. Just like any other manager, my first key role is to boost the productivity of the employees under me. The objective of all organizations is to boost their productivity measured by examining the output increase over the amount of input that used. I always strive to embrace key initiatives of developing all the members within the workplace setting with the goal of achieving the productivity goals. This is a critical step towards the success as a leader. I am always expected to plan for the usage of limited resources whilst ensuring that high output levels among employees is realized. While establishing a framework for good management of resources, other nurses under my stewardship will get to a point where they can perform the assigned tasks within the specified time hence, the higher level of productivity.

My role as a nurse shift leader is to motivate other employees to embrace new and existing challenges aimed at improving performance. The process of improving management performance is not an easy one. This will depend heavily on initiatives that I will develop as the manager. Motivation plays a key role towards the success of an organization because employees who will implement the strategies developed. Without motivation, it will be a hard task for me to carry out my duties effectively. Managers have the role of motivating the workers under them to take on new initiatives resulting in the overall organizational success. Leaders act as agents of inspiration to the workers leading to better work performance, delivered on time. This is critical because the nurses under me will be are critical in determining the extent of success in the clinical setting (Armstrong, 2006).

In addition, management plays a key role towards boosting performance by enhancing the growth and development of workers. Employee growth is an essential component of top performing organizations. For performance to be improved, the members of the organization have to develop strong skills, and competencies in their respective areas of work. This cannot be achieved without necessary incentives for the management towards all members. In my case, I will organize for periodic performance evaluations accompanied by necessary rewards for the best performers. This will bolster the desire among the members of the organization to give more input in their responsibilities.

Managers also play key roles in facilitating the improvement of performance by working with the members of the organization in the process of harmonizing the personal goals of the members with the corporate goals of the organization. High performing organizations have made efforts to harmonize their goals with the personal goals of their members. Organizations are made up of members / employees who are human, and so they have personal goals that they wish to satisfy as they work. Their personal goals may at times be contrary to the corporate goals, making it difficult for optimum performance to be realized by the organization. It will be my role to harmonize the desires of the nurses with the departmental needs at the adult ICU.

The other role of management in improving the performance is that of providing the vision of the organization. As a nurse shift leader, I will be responsible for ensuring that I provide a clear vision to all the nurses under my docket. In addition, I will ensure that the nurses are aware of the vision in my department and the vision for the entire hospital. After this, the nurses will easily connect the roles assigned to them with the missions and vision. From my efforts, I will have created a responsive workplace where everyone will be aware of our destination at the adult ICU. Having a clear understanding of the vision that an organization upholds plays a clear role in boosting the commitment of the workers towards their assignments (Schuler and Jackson, 2007).

Management also plays a key role in boosting performance, by taking on major decisions that are related to the performance of an organization. In this context, managers are key decision makers, and the decisions they make has an impact on the overall performance of the organization. As a nurse shift leader, I will consider the decisions that are undertaken from other departments within the hospital and the impacts it will have on the nurses under my stewardship. In fact, I will ensure that timely and well thought decisions are communicated earnestly to the entire staff. I will also seek to harmonize the points of conflict between my decision and those of other managers with similar roles in the hospital. This will be critical in ensuring in-house wrangles are minimized; they might affect employee performance if not addressed professionally. While executing my roles, it will be critical for me to weigh out the decisions that are needed at the different levels of operational management. Performance is improved through the development of the right framework in decision-making.

Managers largely play key roles in boosting performance in an organization by coordinating activities within their reach. Indeed, organizing is one of the critical functions of management that allows work processes to be carried out appropriately leading to improved performance among staff. In this context, I will be a responsible for coordinating the different tasks within the hospital and boosting the efforts provided by the nurses. Coordination of different activities plays a key role in determining the output from the tasks being performed. As a nurse leader, I will be expected to be effective in coordinating the different activities that take place from time to another leading to better performance of tasks within the adult intensive care unit. With effective coordination of the different activities, synergy is created among the nurses resulting in improved performance.

Managers improve performance by promoting accountability within the organizational setup. Accountability is an important component of organizational success because it allows organizations to account for the revenues and expenditures in the work setting. Effective management will develop structures of accountability among all the members where wastes and losses that accrue due to the absence of checks and balances will be minimized. It is my responsibility as a Nurse Shift Leader to ensure that all the members in the work setting are accountable for their actions. Accountability will result in increased responsibility leading to better performance of nurses with the adult intensive care unit (Hesketh, 2006).

Managers also play a key role in improving performance by taking on the position as communication agents. Managers are responsible for ensuring that there is effective communication within the workplace and among employees. In fact, communication plays a critical role in improving the effort that workers offer at work. As a Nurse Shift Leader, I will ensure that critical information needed by the nurse as they conduct their work is provided in a timely and accurate manner. Besides, I will have to develop the right communication structures so that work processes can be executed well. I will ensure that the flow of information within the unit is done correctly besides minimizing the possible errors that may occur (Schuler and Jackson, 2007).

This is possible by empowering the nurses with constructive feedback about their efforts. Communication is a key success factor in allowing an organization to excel in the delivery of its objectives. Performance and the type / culture of communication in a given organization cannot be separated (Chew, and Horwitz, 2004). This is because all work processes are supervised via appropriate communication structures that have been established. In this regard, nurses will deliver according to my expectations because I have communicated appropriately. For instance, by developing a positive communication culture within the department, employees will experience a better working environment, which often results in improved performance (Avolio, Bass & Jung, 2009).

As a nurse shift leader, I will employ the services of the human resource department in performing occasional reviews and appraisals on the performance of the nurses within the adult intensive care unit. I will be involved in measuring the work that is done by different employees and appraising them according to their efforts. In this context, I will examine the inputs from the nurses and determining the rewards that they deserve. The result is that the nurses will be motivated to boost their performance within their unit: this is an important component of boosting the performance in any organization (Schuler, and Jackson, 2007).

Managers play the role of improving performance by providing the needed learning and development opportunities. Learning and development are key components of building performance in any organization. The 21st century has seen an increased emphasis being directed towards learning and development. It will be my responsibility as a nurse shift leader to provide a work atmosphere characterized by learning and development programs across the board. Through developing best learning and development programs, I will improve the value and capabilities of other nurses. Learning and development programs will enable the nurse to build on their skills and competencies. This often leads to increased productivity and enhanced service delivery within the healthcare setting (Benson and Brown, 2011).

In addition, learning and development programs implemented by managers often lead to innovation, and creativity in the place of work. Through the implementation of learning and development programs in an organizational setting, employees will learn how to do new things, they learn how they can be innovative, and how they can improve on their value in the organization. I will endeavor to do this at the health care unit. Such programs often lead to a positive attitude change among workers, leading to improved work performance. Through learning and development programs, people learn about new skills and competencies, and are challenged to take on new initiatives (Morris et al., 2009).

Indeed, innovation and creativity are highly coveted values because of the high positive impact that they have on work performance. In the 21st century, leading organizations have been known to be organizations that are highly innovative, and are focused towards excellence. Therefore, I will play the key role of boosting performance by encouraging the nurses to embrace new approaches of work when handling challenging tasks. This makes it possible for work performance to improve in terms of volume of work in the given work setting. This also adds value to the sustainability of the unit and its future in providing cutting-edge services within the hospital and in the industry (Awamleh & Gardner, 2004).

My role as a nurse shift leader will also revolve around improving the performance of the department by engaging in strategic planning. Strategic planning is an important element in improving performance in any organization. Managers have the responsibility of boosting the performance of workers by ensuring that the laid plans are well organized whilst promoting the smooth operation of the business (Alannah & Mark, 2004). I will be highly involved in the strategic planning process, thereby enabling the adult intensive care unit to succeed and sustain itself in the long run. Through strategic planning, the broader objectives of the organization are identified leading to the smooth flow of work in an organizational setting, which ultimately leads to improved work performance (Schuler, and Jackson, 2007).
