Fun with Frisbee: The Ultimate in Fitness and Fun

Sports participation is generally perceived as inherently involving competition as the primary element of the game, especially in many sports popular in the United States. Not everyone enjoys competition, however, and this can make participating in a variety of sports less appealing to many individuals that might have a calmer, more egalitarian, or more cooperative approach to life. In addition, highly varied athletic abilities and levels of physical coordination and other physical skills make some sports more or less difficult for different individuals, and some sports are all but impossible to play well unless one is in very good physical condition. None of this should be taken to mean that participating in a sport requires an intense levels of physical skill or athletic ability, or an incredibly competitive spirit; there are many ways that sports can be enjoyed even by more amateur enthusiasts and those who truly like the playing of the game more than winning. Ultimate Frisbee is one such sport, and though there are certainly elements of competitiveness and athletic ability involved in the sport, this is something that can be played without intense competition by players of all levels as an enjoyable way to promote health and develop new skills.

Ultimate Frisbee is a game that consists of two teams, each trying to score points by throwing the Frisbee to a player in the end-zone of the opposing team, and though of course this game can be played competitively it is often played just for fun, without keeping track of score and even with players switching teams if sides appear unbalanced. Pick-up games and even leagues exist that emphasize having fun and engaging in cooperative teamwork rather than winning as the ultimate goal, which means the sport can be enjoyed by players with a broad range of perspectives and attitudes when it comes to competition. Competition occurs in many spheres of life, perhaps most especially in sports, but the world does not actually have to work this way. While experiencing the thrill of victory can definitely be fun it certainly isn't everything, and it's not the point of Frisbee.

Competition might be completely avoidable in a game of Ultimate Frisbee, yet there are several physical skills and athletic elements in the sport, including throwing and especially running or some other form of full body movement that are required to engage in play. Even with the involvement of these skills, however, it is very possible to enjoy playing Frisbee at a low level of physical ability or exertion. The game can be played at a walking pace for example, or even by individuals in wheelchairs or with other ability issues, and it is easy to make all manner of accommodations for other physical disabilities or desired levels of exertion or relaxation. The game of Ultimate Frisbee can be played at a very intense level, involving as much running as soccer, as much throwing as baseball, and as much impromptu team coordination as basketball; the game can also be played, however, by obese octogenarians on respirators, if enough interested players could be found Frisbee is about moving and achieving at our own potential, not some external athletic standards or expectations.

Athleticism and competition can certainly be found in the sport of Ultimate Frisbee, but the most important thing about playing Frisbee is that it's a lot of fun. If you enjoy competition and getting an excellent aerobic workout, Ultimate Frisbee will certainly be seen as fun simply because of those elements, but they are not the only source of fun in the game. The soar of the Frisbee when it is properly thrown and the hilarity of its twist and falls when it is not are equally amusing, and the time spent with friends during a round of play is also a great attraction of the game for many players. There are other benefits besides the simple fun of the game, too: even at a low-level of competition, the movement that is involved with Ultimate Frisbee will enhance the physical fitness of any participant. Getting the muscles moving is good for circulation, bone health, and overall health, so even those who play Ultimate Frisbee at a slow walk or with limited mobility will start to gain some immediate benefits. With regular playing, speed and ability will increase and so will the workout, leading to even greater health improvements. Getting fit and having fun are two very important goals, and with Ultimate Frisbee you can kill both birds with one toss!
