Innovation and Advertising

"Creating a Culture of Innovation" Lecture: Do you agree with the speaker's views on innovation? Why, or why not?

Terri Kelly the current CEO of W.L. Gore, provides a strategic overview of the company's unique and highly effective strategies for creating a culture rich with innovation. The underlying concepts she mentions underscore how egalitarian the company is in terms of leadership, and how a leader is defined only by those willing to follow them and their product or service vision to delivered product. As the announcer mentions this is called a distributed leadership model, Ms. Kelly explains how the company seeks to give employees the opportunity to have a very high level of initiative and ownership over their work. Further, the discussion shows the culture is very successful in creating a high degree of autonomy, mastery and purpose in the employees, as the turnover rate is just 5%. The company is growing at 7% a year over a decade; quite an accomplishment in these turbulent economic times. Further the technologies and production processes that W.L. Gore relies on as part of their core business model are complex requiring highly skilled, college-educated workers. By evaluating their product lines on their website, it is clear that this company greatly prizes technically-based knowledge and intelligence.

In conclusion, W.L. Gore's unique approach works because they are attracting the type of employees that can thrive in such an open environment that is anchored in the foundation of freedom, fairness, commitment, and waterline.

The IBM and the Apple commercials: What strikes you about the IBM and the Apple commercials? What are the key differences? Are there any similarities?

The IBM commercials attempt to entertain and educate about products at the same time. Apple's commercials resonate with the passion of Steve Jobs to change the world. The differences are stark and the non-conformist nature of the Apple messages are infused with passion and daring individuality.
