Intern Statement Boston University is a 150-year-old institution located in Boston Massachusetts on the banks of the Charles River. At least 30,000 students attend the university, from around the country and the world. I am one of those students, and I just served as an intern at Boston University in the Distance Education center. This was my first job and I worked as an intern web designer for the Distance Learning education center.
I did not actually do the web design, but I did the small things, such as web maintenance, graphics, and updating the web site with new course materials, news, and registration information. My major was graphic design, and so I expected to work mostly on graphics and design of web pages, but in reality I was able to learn much more about the technical side of computers and the web.
I was also able to learn more about interactive web classes and how they are created and uploaded to the Internet. I especially enjoyed learning more about creating web pages - how to design and implement them. I learned some basic web page coding techniques in HTML and XML, and discovered coding web pages (basic ones anyway), is quite simple. I was doing basic coding after a day or two of study and practice.
Of course, there are much more complicated coding languages used for web pages, which I did not deal with, but I enjoyed learning the basics. A learned quite a bit from this internship. First, I was not that familiar with the distance education portion of the university, and so I learned how courses online and via video and satellite. I learned about the details of distance learning, and how students enroll, get credit, and participate in these distance learning courses.
It was very interesting, and I enjoyed my experience very much. I believe I have a larger concept of Boston University's commitment to educating a wide variety of students by working in this department. Since students anywhere in the world can participate in these classes whenever they want, it is a convenient way for many people to attend school or finish their education.
During my internship, I reported directly to Eldon Strickland who is the manager of the BU online program, but I interacted with just about everyone in the distance learning center. Since there are only six people in the department, I worked closely with each one at some time or another. I also worked with the departments who were creating online classes in order to convert their materials to an online format, and load the course online when it was completed.
In this way, I was able to see how the course was created, and add some design features. I also learned how to edit courses and other online materials, and how they are conceived. It was an interesting and challenging process. I believe I accomplished a great deal during my internship in the distance learning center. I learned much more about the technical aspects of the Internet, including coding Internet documents with HTML and XML.
I also learned more about designing graphics for the Internet, and how they differ from print and other media. Besides everything I learned, I was.
