Movie technique and cinematographic methods

Complexity is one of the best words that can describe Guy Richie's 2008 film Rocknrolla, as the script focuses on the violence and fun present in the London underground. Whether it is because of the fact that Richie is British or because of the fact that he has a different perception on gangster movies, Rocknrolla is definitely unlike everything one might see in a film made in Hollywood. The movie succeeds in making crime seem amusing, and, in spite of the action appearing to be rather ordinary for characters such as Archy or Uri, it is captivating for the audience. In addition to that, Richie manages to make good use of visual effects and soundtracks, making the viewers more and more passionate as they watch the movie.

From the beginning of the movie, the audience is being taken to Richie land, witnessing a series of offenses, each more intriguing than the other. The director virtually leaves no time for the viewers to catch their breath, as the dialogue and the plot have a fast-paced rhythm.

Crime, drama, and comedy are present all across the motion picture, with the director even managing to bring suspense into it. Regardless of the magnitude of their roles in the movie, the actors do outstandingly, with even the small roles impressing through the dedication of the actors performing them.

What is absorbing about the movie is that certain sequences do not feel as if they do not belong, in spite of the fact that they are clearly not connected to any elements from the rest of the film. For example, it does not seem peculiar that One Two and Stella's dialogue in the dance scene is barely heard, considering the fact that Richie chooses to use onscreen text in order to have his audience acquainted with the conversation. The eccentricity expressed by all of the characters contributes in giving a unique touch to the movie. Considering the fact that most of the actors present in the movie are British, and, probably less famous than the stars in the U.S., the audience has the chance to focus on the plot and the characters instead of focusing on just one actor.

While most of the audience might recognize Gerard Butler from the action role that he performed in 300, it might come as a surprise to them to observe that he is also good at being a comedian. His character in Rocknrolla manages to make fun out of almost every situation, regardless of its gravity. In parallel to the main plot, a subplot goes at presenting the relationship between One Two and one of his best friends that admits that he is gay.

Another amusing situation involving Butler is when he and his friend Mumbles (Idris Elba) attempt to steal a car filled with seven million euro. It all goes along well until One Two realizes that he did not take the car keys from the people that he had just robbed. Moreover, he does not manage to put the car in reverse, in order to make a quick getaway. The scene has the audience see Butler turning from first-class robber to petty thief, as he needs assistance from his own victims so as to take the money.

It almost looks as if Richie intended to make a fairytale for grownups that enjoy action and violence. A normal film that involves gangsters normally has both good and bad guys. Rocknrolla, however, only has people that are either interested in performing a rip off, or have already performed one. Even with the fact that he initially appears to fill just a small role in the film, Toby Kebbell gradually proves that he is the main character. While he is relatively unknown at the beginning of the movie, Kebbell emerges through incendiary scenes that involve danger, punk, and drugs.

Kebbell character advances rapidly, with him turning to philosophizing in regard to seemingly important matters. Most of the audience will definitely consider this character to be interesting, considering the fact that Kebbell has a strong influence on all of the characters in the movie. Johnny Quid never ceases to amaze throughout the film, with him being able to produce philosophical thoughts and to get out victorious out of almost any problem that he stumbles upon.

As matters advance, people cannot get enough of the movie, as it virtually contains no dull moment, with its characters constantly making efforts to keep the storyline on track. Thandie Newton does not refrain from keeping up with the rest of the actors, and, moreover, she manages to make a flawless performance. The ice-queen role that she plays engages her character into combining both cleverness and beauty in order to have all the men that she meets falling for her.
