2. Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City (BBBS)
Founded in 1904, this organization concerns itself with the advancement of the relevant assistance to kids so as to further enhance their ability to fully exploit their capabilities. This it does via the provision of one-to-one mentorship opportunities between children and mentors whose impact on the youth is not only measurable, but also demonstrated. According to the organization, its “mission has been to give all children in New York City who face adversity an opportunity to experience a strong, enduring professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationship with adults that will help change their lives for the better” (BBBS, 2019).
Some of the programs BBBS runs are inclusive of a teenage/young mothers support program, the FDNY partnership program, the 9/11 support initiative, etc. The organization also runs its original mentorship program alongside the undertakings listed above. In seeking to fulfill its mandate, BBBS partners with various stakeholders including, but not limited to, the immediate community, volunteers, and families (BBBS, 2019).
3. CapraCare, Inc.
Founded in 2009, this particular organization attempts to find solutions to some of the most urgent health needs of students in one of Haiti’s largest cities. Towards this end CapraCare, Inc. focuses on Fonfrede’s rural community. The organization’s stated mission is the provision of “access to medical care, preventable healthcare, mental health services, and health and nutrition education services…” (CapraCare, Inc., 2019).
Some of the programs under the CapraCare, Inc. banner largely focus on mental health, youth development, and community health. The organization invites donations on its website from well-wishers so as to keep its programs going. Those who donate to the organization can select the specific program they intend to support.
4. Community League of the Heights (CLOTH)
This is an innovative organization that appears to fully subscribe to the notion that charity begins at home. In essence, CLOTH concerns itself with the empowerment as well as provision of necessary support to Washington Heights’ residents who are disadvantaged in one way or another. Towards this end, the organization focuses on addressing disinvestment as well as poverty challenges that bedevil those who reside in Washington Heights (CLOTH, 2019). The organization has been in existence for more than six decades.
Some of the services provided by the league focus on youth education and empowerment, health and wellness, and affordable housing. Further, CLOTH assists members of the community without jobs to secure employment and has schemes that seek to prepare persons for employment, i.e. through confidence enhancement and related skills. It is also important to note that in seeking to further cater for the specific needs of the neighborhood, CLOTH also provides adult education opportunities (CLOTH, 2019). Skills acquired on this from are inclusive of math and English competencies as well as High School Equivalency initiatives.
5. Financial Services Volunteer Corps (FSVC)
Founded close to two decades ago, FSVC focuses on the foundation as well as establishment of sustainable financial and banking systems in countries categorized as transitory. In so doing, the organization attempts to develop economies that are market-oriented. FSCV describes itself as “a not-for-profit organization that advances economic development by strengthening financial sectors in developing countries” (FSCV, 2019). Towards this end, it believed that financial systems that are healthy and stable come in handy in not only the creation of job opportunities, but also in the further promotion of economic growth.
It is important to note that FSVC is part of VEGA, i.e. Volunteers in Economic Growth Alliance. In basic terms, VEGA comprises of 15 organizations that seek to advance the necessary assistance and advice to developing nations. In providing assistance to developing and transition countries, FSVC routinely deploys experienced professionals in the financial sector. These professionals serve on a volunteer basis.
6. International Coalition to End Torture (ICET)
Torture is not only degrading but could also in some instances leave permanent physical and psychological scars. This is especially scary considering that some of the recipients of torture could be individuals who are entirely innocent. For this reason, the relevance of discouraging torture cannot be overstated. Towards this end, the International Coalition to End Torture (ICET) dedicates itself to the promotion “of the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and thus raising human rights awareness around the world by knowing them, demanding them, and defending them” (ICET, 2019). Towards this end, the organization invites people from all walks of life to promote the dignity of human beings by demanding that torture be done away with across various jurisdictions.
In seeking to fulfill its mandate, ICET makes use of a wide range of tactics including lobbying other NGOs, national institutions, as well as regional entities towards the promotion of a torture-free world. The organization has been in existence since the year 2003 when it was launched by Amnesty International.
7. Jewish Foundation for the Righteous (JFR)
As JFR (2019) points out, there were thousands of people during the Holocaust that were gracious enough to stand up for what was right despite all the evil that was taking place all around them. These heroes essentially risked their lives in order to rescue scores of Jews. In recognition of such acts of selflessness, Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis, as JFR (2019) observes, “established the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous (JFR) to fulfill the traditional Jewish commitment to hakarat hatov, the searching out and recognition of goodness.”
Today, those who rescued thousands of Jews from the jaws of death are in need – although, as JFR points out, they may not be quick to seek help. The organization promotes the view that this is the time to honor these Righteous Gentiles. In essence, the organization routinely advances some financial assistance on a monthly basis to the ageing rescuers. Further, the organization also has in place the Holocaust education initiative; a program that seeks to preserve not only the legacies, but also the memories of rescuers.
8. Nourishing NYC
Some of the challenges faced by poverty-stricken communities in cities from across the world are hunger and poor nutrition. Nourishing NYC is a well-thought-out initiative whose mission is to essentially “alleviate the strong correlation between low-income status and poor dietary health by providing nutritious meals and nutritional educational to all” (Nourishing NYC, 2019).
It should be noted that on a weekly basis, the organization avails to all those in need a delicious and nutritionally-balanced meal. In seeking to address the hunger and poor nutrition of poor New York City communities, Nourishing NYC adopts a multipronged approach with three key objectives. These are: feed, educate, and advocate (NPL, 2019).
9. Peer Health Exchange
Obesity is increasingly becoming a global concern. This is more so the case given that the same has been associated with numerous health complications. One of the triggers of obesity and overweight is poor eating habits and inactivity. With obesity affecting mostly young people, Peer Health Exchange comes in handy as a promoter of healthy decisions amongst young people.
The mission of Peer Health Exchange is “to empower young people with the knowledge, skills, and resources to make healthy decisions” (Peer Health Exchange, 2019). In seeking to fulfill its mandate, the organization amongst other things equips college students with the necessary tools and knowhow to impart the relevant knowledge on healthy decisions to various schools that happen to be under-resourced across the nation.
10. Shark Angels
This is an organization attempting to save one of the world’s most endangered species from extinction. According to Shark Angels, despite the shark population having decreased by more than 90%, more sharks are being killed each year. The organization seeks to stop this looming extinction by pursuing a number of strategies.
In addition to sensitizing others on the need to protect this endangered species, Shark Angels also attempts to bring “the issues facing sharks into public consciousness – through graphic but engaging online, viral and broadcast media” (Shark Angels, 2019). The organization further seeks to improve sharks’ image and standing in the eyes of the masses with an intention of winning more ambassadors for shark protection.
