This is substantial knowledge for nurses to remember for several reasons. For one, it will help nurses better understand their colleagues (Husted, 2008). For example, a nurse who attended a better school than their colleague, will be more understanding if their colleague under performs or is hesitant in comparison because he or she had a higher quality education (Husted, 2008). Conflicts between colleagues are less likely to arrive when there is an understanding that performance among each other may differ due to varying circumstances. (Benner, 2009).
In addition, nurses should retain that their coworkers expertise will most likely not be the same due to the varying routes everyone takes to the medical field and nursing career path for delegation sake (Benner, 2009). Delegating is a tremendous tasks for nurses put in the position to delegate because so much depends on them making an accurate decision (Benner, 2009). Knowing a nurses' education and being able to understand why there level of expertise is where it is can be extremely helpful in such a judgment as delegation (Husted, 2008). By comprehending a nurses' background, delegating nurses are able to reach resolutions with more ease than if left uneducated on their colleagues expertise (Husted, 2008).

Knowing this allows for nurses not to be alarmed or taken aback if a nurse they are working with does something unexpected during patient care (Apker, 2006). Of course, nurses should be aware that procedures taking place are within normal parameters and nursing guidelines, but should not be frightened of slight variations of techniques (Benner, 2009). The eventual goal is for nurses to reach an equivalently high level of performance but even then each nurse will complete tasks slightly differently from their colleagues (Benner, 2009). It is highly-regarded for nurses to know why their colleagues' expertise and techniques differ (Husted, 2008). This allows for the assembly of a well-rounded and accepting staff that associates and collaborates well together (Husted, 2008).
