Limited or no laws or regulations in place to define and/or recognize limits that support reporting potential abuse or neglect or even identifying who and why it is occurring. Barriers to Response, minimal infrastructure for follow up care and well-being checks based on rural isolation and limited resources. Qualitative and quantitative reviews of existing research and new research a. Local/Regional review of events of elder abuse and/or neglect will be conducted to determine the scope and scale of the problem, i.e. quantitative research b.

Interviews will be conducted if possible that will address the qualitative experience of those affected, including health care workers, abused individuals and potentially those who perpetrated the abuse to determine the recognized need for support of those involved. In other words what could have been done to eliminate risk and potentially respond to it in the given situation. 3. Analysis and evaluation of stakeholder interest and abilities in local/regional research (i.e.) new quantitative and qualitative research. a.

A review of the involvement of each stakeholder interest and a need to develop responses to potential risk or real problems associated with elder abuse and neglect. b. Program recommendations for investing in rural training of health care workers at both primary and acute levels as well as support for a program that will aide in prevention and support post event or concern regarding potential and/or real abuse reports and events and will be based on both new research and review of broader problem. 4.

Development of analysis and evaluation of existing recognition, intervention and response systems in the local/regional study area. The proposal will support the development of a small review of a local/regional rural market. The market will be identified through crime statistics and potentially through conversations with local health department officials to determine the pre-review scope and scale of elder abuse and neglect. I will first search for newspaper articles associated with reports of elder abuse or neglect and then contact health and welfare in said community.

Additionally, I will conduct interviews with emergency care and primary care intake specialists in the area to attempt to determine the number of suspected cases of elder abuse and neglect seen in the region. Finally if possible I will identify at least one at risk family and attempt to determine how future events of abuse and/or neglect could be avoided through support. a. Review intent of individuals to remain independent and still receive adequate daily care. b. Involve options training including meal support, home care support and even options for residential care for both elders and care providers. To attempt to demonstrate changes in policy that will better protect elders from abuse and neglect by providing stakeholder support for independence either in home or in facilty. c.

Support health care workers in offering such council through informed development of tools for future use, such as pamphlets and contact information for both at home support alternatives and assisted living or nursing home placement depending on needs and wishes of stakeholders.
