Production Management Benefits From Proposed Term Paper

It has been stated by Dupont that "maintenance is the largest single controllable expenditure in a plant." (What is Proactive Maintenance?) The first difficulty for many is to understand the reality of large costs for maintenance. The costs come from loss of production while the workers have to be paid. The general reasons for the failure of any machinery, of whatever type it may be is due to fluid contamination for all equipment failure. This is true for any type of machinery and the smallest particle can ultimately bring a machine to a halt. Among the three types of maintenance that are used, predictive maintenance is based on maintaining the machine once signs are seen that the machine has begun to give trouble. In this manner, there will be a few machines which will be left free for maintenance, and thus save on wages to be paid to the employees. The second method is to go on a preventive maintenance according to a predetermined schedule, whether the machine requires maintenance or not. This also can be taken up on a day when the factory would not be working otherwise. For both these styles of maintenance, it does not matter as to who is responsible for doing the maintenance....

(What is Proactive Maintenance?)
Along with these, the third policy of proactive maintenance should be adopted, and this involves the checking of oil, or water that goes into the machines so that they are absolutely particle free. This is a system of contamination control. To implement this method, there are three steps. First is to establish the target fluid cleanliness levels for each machine fluid system. Second is to choose and install filtration equipment and contaminant exclusion techniques so that the highest cleanliness levels are maintained. The third step is to maintain fluid cleanliness at pre-determined intervals so that the target cleanliness levels are maintained. (What is Proactive Maintenance?) It is important to look at all aspects before taking a decision as we may otherwise end up in taking an expensive decision.
