The authors of this particular resource make an observation to the effect that the relevance of yoga cannot be overstated in efforts to improve the wellbeing of persons diagnosed with substance abuse. It would be prudent to note that as has been pointed out in the article, yoga has in the past been deployed in the treatment of several comorbid conditions. These are inclusive of, but they are not limited to, depression. According to authors, it is increasingly becoming apparent that as an adjunct to other interventions meant to treat persons diagnosed with substance abuse disorder, yoga holds some promise. This is more so the case for persons whose addiction problem involves opiates. One of the factors that appears to favor the deployment of yoga on this front is the fact that it happens to be well-tolerated by patients. Indeed, according to the authors, in their efforts to manage pain, patients with opiate abuse problems have a higher probability of embracing yoga for a longer period of time, in comparison to other approaches. Further, the authors are also categorical that in comparison to other interventions, yoga has fewer adverse effects. This is especially the case when it comes to the treatment of both primary addictions and conditions considered secondary comorbidities. Yet another factor that works for yoga is the fact that it can be deployed in group settings. However, it should be noted that as the authors in this case indicate, the setting should be the main determinant of the approach taken by the practitioner in efforts to fuse yoga with other interventions. However, the authors of this present study indicate that there is need for additional controlled research in this realm owing to the fact that the findings of the said study are founded on limited data.

When it comes to program evaluation, this particular article presents a new perspective in as far as the treatment of substance abuse is concerned. In the past, most authors have focused on traditional interventions to the treatment of substance abuse. The recommendations of this article has practical implications for program evaluation owing to the fact that the information presented could be used to further enhance the effectiveness of substance abuse programs. Further, it should also be noted that the recommendations that the authors in this case make could come in handy in future program design efforts. This is more so the case given that program evaluation is largely focused upon the systematic collection of both program outcomes and characteristics with an intention of making informed decisions on how to further enhance the effectiveness of the relevant programs.

This could be deemed an instrumental resource in as far as outcomes evaluation (which is also referred to as outcomes-based evaluation) is concerned. This is more so the case in relation to not only the planning, but also the implementation of the said evaluation. The focus of the resource happens to be nonprofit organizations. According to the author, the relevance of prioritizing outcomes evaluation cannot be overstated. The key objective of nonprofit programs is to make a positive impact. For this reason, the author indicates that the said programs should be focused on the difference being made, and to what extent. This falls in the realm of outcomes evaluation, whose primary components have been identified by the author of this particular article as; inputs, activities, outputs, outcomes, outcome targets, as well as outcome indicators. The author goes ahead and outlines not only the questions that should be floated in all evaluation planning efforts, but also the steps that should be followed in the planning of outcomes evaluation. There are a total of 6 steps that have been identified on this front. The said steps, as listed by the author are; getting ready, choosing outcomes, selecting indicators, planning data/information, pilot/testing, and analyzing/reporting. It is important to note that there are various other kinds of evaluation in addition to outcomes evaluation. With this in mind, the author recommends that the reader familiarizes him or herself with these other kinds of outcomes evaluation as well so as to reap the maximum benefit from this particular resource.
