" All African-Americans straddle the line represented by their double consciousness, often walking back and forth between multiple identities. The double consciousness may be especially apparent for African-Americans from Caribbean descent who also address the issues related to the immigrant experience. African-Americans have a unique history among Americans. The slavery experience has defined the black identity, and has created a legacy of racism that persists even with an African-American president proving that most social barriers have been broken down. While the election of Barack Obama can be viewed as a major breakthrough in race relations, the Wal-Mart incident also shows that the country has a long way to go before identifying, acknowledging, and healing its own double-consciousness.
