Abstract

The biggest problem that Digipos faced is that system upgrades required that merchants shut down their operations while the company replaced the system. The systems components were built into the system and did not allow access for service or replacement. Therefore replacement of the system was a major ordeal that required retailers to close their stores every few years to upgrade their POS systems.

Examine and assess the main computing problems Digipos faced with regard to system upgrades.

Evaluate the solutions that Digipos used to resolve the problem. Propose an alternative solution that you believe could resolve the problem.

Digipos addressed this problem that creating a new system that allowed for components to be interchangeable and thus extending the lives of the system considerably. It was estimated that the new Digipos system could have an effective life of ten years while competing systems need to be replaced every three years or so. An lower cost alternative to the Digipos system would be to design a component system that also allowed for parts upgrades without having to replace the entire system. Although Digipos's system offer convenience, it is reasonable to suspect that similar outcomes could be achieved without the use of the higher cost Intel components.

3. Compare and contrast the Quantum Blade to the Retail Blade system in terms of computer architecture and system performance.

The DigiPos Quantum Blade offers primarily energy efficiency upgrades when compared with the Retail Blade. The Intel Atom Processor is a low voltage processor that can be intergrated with video decoding, graphics, and memory controller on a single system-on-a-chip (SoC) and thus offering a comprehsive computing solution to most application while only consuming about 3 watts (Intel, 2009). Furthermore, with a SSD and no fan, it is likely that these systems will also be more reliable than their counterparts.

4. Evaluate the methods that are outlined in the study to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO).
