Characterizing the network infrastructure is the next step in designing a new network. To be able to develop a network map, different methods must be used. It is possible to figure out the architecture of the existing network by locating the cabling in the physical environment (Oppenheimer, 1998). The accessibility to major hosts and storage spaces can also be determined by taking a good look at the physical set up of the network. The location of the major internetworking devices as well as network segments is very important. All cables and their types or uses should be documented. The lengths of the cables are also important in order to be able to check the quality of connections. Environmental constraints can be seen within the physical environment of the network.

Developing a network map can only be done after the proper evaluation of the existing network (Oppenheimer, 1998). The location of major hosts and other things such as interconnection devices should be documented. To be able to understand traffic flow, the location and length of cables should be examined. The existing data flow within the network and the performance will help in evaluating the health of the existing network. The location and concentration areas of the users should be determined so that different traffic levels can be monitored and supported. The location of major hosts might need to be reexamined to have a better functioning network. The implemented network's map should be obtained so that a better one can be designed.

A lot of programs that include network diagramming tools allow people to map out existing networks in order to better understand them. A very detailed network map will allow users to see the geographical aspects that are affecting the network. The country, state and province the network is in might affect the health and availability of the network. WAN and LAN connections between different locations from buildings to different countries matter when it comes to this. The connections between rooms, floors and even cubicle spaces should be examined, as well. Take note of the services providers and the major server farms for networks. Major network management stations are important to document (Penttinen, 1999).
There are a number of steps included in redesigning a network. However, before the design process starts, it is best to understand the needs of the business and the existing network. The goals of the organization and the information being passed around are important things to take note of (Farr, 1988). Different methods in characterizing networks and locating major parts of the system are important to learn.
