¶ … KM Tools used to facilitate Knowledge Management?

Effective use of knowledge management (KM) allows commanders to make "informed, timely decisions despite the uncertainty of operations," (WOCC KM Video). Knowledge management supports all process activities and is therefore everyone's responsibility (WOCC KM Video). There are several tools that can facilitate the flow of knowledge in the KM process, including tools that access knowledge, tools for semantic mapping, tools for knowledge extraction, tools for expertise localization, and tools for collaboration work (Ghani). Some, but not all, tools of KM are technologies or information technologies. Many tools are more procedural in nature. Operations Order, Staff Estimates, Status Charts, and Common Operational Picture are some of the tools used to facilitate KM in a military setting (WOCC KM Video).

2.What are some KM Processes used to facilitate Knowledge Management?

Knowledge Management processes include methods of creating, sharing, organizing, applying, and transferring knowledge (WOCC KM Video). Information and knowledge sharing through collaborative methods are key processes used to facilitate Knowledge Management. Knowledge management often depends on sharpening focus on key issues. Knowledge synchronization is also an important process used to facilitate Knowledge Management, because as knowledge needs to remain up-to-date, synchronization helps ensure that all parties are privy to new developments. Communications processes that best facilitate Knowledge Management are standardized. The AFORGEN cycle is an articulated process that facilitates Knowledge Management through ongoing assessment, capture, awareness, and collaboration. Time management and technical systems, meeting analysis, as well as content management analysis are also important KM processes (WOCC KM Video). Finally, decision-making is a critical component of effective Knowledge Management.

3.What are some other resources used to facilitate Knowledge Management?

People are the most important resources used to facilitate Knowledge Management. All members of the team participate in KM, but there is a steady flow of information according to the needs of the mission. Commanders may control the flow but depend on subordinates for effective Knowledge Management. The structure and culture of the organization impact KM resources and the processes used to maintain them. Organizations provide resources through staff and units dedicated to Knowledge Management.
