Government: Fiscal Policy One of the policies that the local and the federal governments have strived to streamline in order to help the local citizens who are old and disabled is the property tax exemption for senior citizens and disabled persons. This is one policy that is complex to understand ye it is crucial to do so since it is the good understanding of the same that will enable one to apply and benefit from the government tax relief.

The article outlines some major points that need to be understood by the elderly and disabled in line with property tax exemption. There are four factors, the age or disability, ownership, residency, and income requirements that the article outlines for one to be eligible for the property tax exemption in Washington State. The article outlines that on the 31st December of the year of eligibility the individual must have been 61 years old or unable to work due to disability.

The individual also need to have owned a home on the December 31 of the year before the taxes are exempted. The type of ownership must be in total as a life estate or by contract purchase. If the property is owned by a couple then one of them meeting the eligibility requirements is enough to get the exemption.

The property also needs to have been your permanent residence by December 31 of the previous year before exemption year, though if one is in hospital, boarding home, nursing home during the previous December 31 then one still qualifies. The disposable income for the household should not exceed $40,000 annually. There are also outlined the exemption application procedures which involves the county assessor who will help the individuals know if they are eligible. There are also procurers for appeal in case one feels they were eligible and left out unfairly.

It also states that there is need to have a renewal of the exemption application every six years. By a large extent, the article articulates the various aspects to do with the tax exemption among the elderly and the disabled. It also brings out the complex calculation of the tax and levies as well as the disposable income for consideration in the exemption.
