According to a recent study, the elderly are hospitalized more often due to alcohol-related problems than for heart attacks (Doup). Another study found some 70% of elderly adults' hospitalizations are related to alcohol, medication, or a mixture of both (Doup).
Many seniors live alone either due to divorce or the death of a spouse, and many more still are retired and have children out of state, and so do not drive as much or as far as before (Doup). This isolation leads many seniors to develop alcohol and drug problems late in life, at a time when they are most vulnerable to medical conditions (Doup). The elderly make up some 11% of the U.S. population, yet they take more than 35% of the drugs prescribed, such as blood pressure medication, sleep medication, and tranquilizers, all of which created a toxic cocktail when mixed with alcohol, causing everything from dizziness to….

She has entered a wonderful second childhood, once again able to love intensely and with brave imagination, once more able to just dream and play - but what is not wonderful about her state (anymore than it is about the state of true childhood) is that she is constantly being shushed and bossed about by those in charge. There is some sense in which she is more independent now than she has been since she was a young child, but she is losing it that independence. Her fragile independence is balanced with degradation, and the falling apart of her body.
That seems to be the most worrisome trend of our treatment of elderly individuals - they are independent, and this is absolutely wonderful, but they buy their independence at a very steep price because as they age and become less capable of being independent that freedom from obligation becomes a….

Yet, many ads lack such sensitivity and actually end up re-affirming every senior citizen's fears.
The next important theme is that of enjoying retirement. This message is portrayed once again largely by banks selling various bank products. However, recently companies promoting travel packages, and other types of consumer products have become another major facet of such reoccurring themes. This plays on the idea that each individual has worked hard his or her whole life, and should therefore be rewarded with freedom in retirement. This type of thematic representation has also occurred in major motion pictures and literature for years. Unlike the previous theme discussed, this theme represents a much brighter view of the lives of senior citizens. This gives gerontological social work a much different perspective of a life outside of normal middle age working experiences. It also represents a shift in consciousness to a more youthful and free type….

Senior Fitness
PAGES 10 WORDS 2521

* The effects on normal aging and metabolism is that after the age of forty, metabolism usually decreases by about 5% every ten years. That does not mean that metabolism cannot be controlled to some extent; it can. Metabolism is loosely defined as the chemical workings within our bodies that help us to maintain a certain level of energy use, calorie burning and general energy (even at rest). As we age, our metabolism rate slows down, meaning that we burn less calories and the ones we do burn are burned at a slower rate. It also means that we may have less energy and our overall health slows as well. * As individuals grow older their muscle mass is less likely to maintain its composition. Bill Sonnemaker, the 2007 IDEA Health and Fitness Personal Trainer of the year states that building muscle mass at any age….

On December 7, 1941, the nation of Japan attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This began the official participation of the United States in orld ar II. hile armed forces were overseas fighting the nation's enemies, the United States government was trying to decide whether or not any group of people within America itself could be working for the other side. Out of this fear came one of the most atrocious acts the United States have ever perpetrated against its own citizens. Fearing internal enemies, the American government signed an order wherein anyone of Japanese descent could be questioned, arrested, detained, and interred at several camps throughout the American est. It was a policy of legal racism that served no good for the government but to instill in the people the knowledge that the government can make mistakes and it is possible to lose one's civil rights even….

Rough Draft - Citizens Should be Allowed to Carry Concealed Handguns

Gun control laws are a hot topic of controversy. Currently, there is not enough legislation that supports the right for people to carry handguns.

Thesis Statement) There should be appropriate legislation and laws passed to allow for citizens to carry concealed handguns.

Gun control laws punish the innocent.) Many people feel that in order to prevent criminals from using guns that improved legislation should be passed to provide tougher laws which restrict the purchase of a handgun and stricter punishment if the laws are broken. People who are against stricter gun control laws feel that the average citizens' constitutional rights would be invaded. To allow citizens the right to carry concealed handguns will discourage violent crimes. Many states have….

Citizens of a Stateless Nation
The emergence of stateless nations around the world and their impact on geopolitical issues, both on a regional and a global scale.

With ethnic minorities such as the Basque and Catalonian separatist movements of Spain, the Quebecois of Canada, the Palestinians of the Middle East, and the Kurds of Iraq and Turkey all staking their claim to autonomy through acts of civil protest, shows of electoral strength, and even militarized means, the issue of stateless nations has become a global priority. The currently hostile engagement between Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip, and their Israeli neighbors, demonstrates the consequences of ignoring the identity of culturally and ethnically unique groups. By studying the distinct circumstances underlying each of these four stateless nations, including their claims to sovereignty and grievances with their parent nation, it is possible to formulate effective solutions which may eventually effect the brokering of a….

Sunrise Foster Senior Community
The Older American Act (OAA) was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on August 14, 1965. The purpose of the law was to provide for the needs of an increasing number of older persons in the United States. The specific objectives of the law included strategies to maintain the dignity and welfare of older individuals. To accomplish this, the law created a vehicle for organizing, coordinating, and providing these services and opportunities not only for the older individuals themselves, but also for their families (Administration on Aging, 2011).

In 2011, Congress is considering reauthorization and some amendments to the OAA to take effect in 2012. Specifically, three mechanisms are under scrutiny to be involved in this process: Administration on Aging (AoA)-convened Listening Forums; OAA eauthorization Input Events; and Direct Input via the AoA Website or Mail.

In order to carry out the mandates of the OAA legislation in….

Lonely Seniors
Senior Citizens Do Not Have to be Lonely

A study involving older adults from senior residential facilities in the Chicago area suggests that isolated seniors may experience twice the risk of Alzheimer's disease compared with those who are not lonely or secluded ("Loneliness linked…" 8). Researchers at the University of California San Francisco analyzed data showing loneliness to be particularly debilitating to older adults and may predict serious health problems and even death. There are both psychological ramifications, such as depression, and physiological ramifications that can be addressed by looking at the problem of loneliness.

The elderly are susceptible to feelings of loneliness and isolation because of life changes that often occur at this stage of life. Individuals may have spent all their adult lives in the work place and be unable to deal with too much newfound leisure time. If they had children, their children are grown, with their own….

Encouraging Seniors to Use the Internet

Many seniors who do not use the Internet do not use it because technology makes them uncomfortable. There are seniors who may not see the ways in which technology assists them in their daily lives and do not see the use for learning new technologies such as the Internet. Some seniors may just be afraid. Whatever the reason, seniors should use the Internet just as much as any other population. In fact, the greatest demographic of users on the rise of FaceBook is people ages 55+. More and more, seniors are becoming more comfortable with the Internet and their usage behaviors will influence the digital landscape just as much as any other group of users. Websites such as the American Association of etired Persons (AAP) has….

Citizen United on the 2012 Elections
Effects of Citizen United

Citizens United is an organization in the United States that does not operate on profit and that focuses on conservatism. The scenario that is commonly related to the organization is the particular Supreme Court Case 'Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission," which attempted to ascertain the legality of specific aspects of campaign finance. The ruling that was made in the case influenced numerous practices that can be condoned during the election period. The 2012 elections are similarly projected to be influenced majorly by Citizens United based on the various changes that it has caused in the election system.

Citizen United's mission is described to be dedication to the restoration of the government of the United States to the control of the 'citizens'. In addition, it is committed to asserting American values that are linked to freedom of enterprise, national sovereignty and safety….

Citizens Arrest
PAGES 5 WORDS 1775

history of citizen's arrests, citizen's arrest in today's society, and give examples of citizen's arrests, the outcomes, etc. It will also look at the downside of making a citizen's arrest, including the repercussions to that individual such as civil action, liability, etc. Citizen's arrests are more common than they have been in the past, with many states reporting higher incidents of these types of arrests (Grossack, Takata). Citizen's arrests have a long and varied history, and are still a frequently valid form of citizen involvement in the often complex process of law enforcement and criminal justice.
The history of citizen's arrests goes back to the beginnings of Anglo-Saxon law in medieval England. Because the medieval sheriffs were spread so thin, they encouraged citizen involvement in law enforcement. David C. Grossack, a Constitutional attorney notes, "Sheriffs encouraged and relied upon active participation by able bodied persons in the towns and villages….

¶ … Citizen Photojournalists and the Mass Media
In today's modern era of Instagram, Facebook, and Flickr, it might be assumed that ordinary citizen photojournalists lack the need for conventional media platforms to showcase their work. However, ultimately the relationship between the mass media and citizen photojournalists is a symbiotic one. Citizen photojournalists still need the platform that validated media channels can provide. But it cannot be denied that citizen photojournalists have had a democratizing influence upon the content of conventional journalism, even journalism driven by the need to make profits versus citizens who simply want to make their voices (and political agendas) heard.

Although the mass media still has a gatekeeping function, given the 24-7 news cycle, media outlets have been rendered dependent upon the need for other sources of information beyond those or professional photographers. Although professional photojournalists may be held to a higher standard of objectivity and integrity on….
