Delray Medical Center

A particular level of personal achievement, drive and professionalism are expected from the individuals who make up the nursing team at Delray Medical Center. Due to the reputation that comes with being both a Level One Trauma Center and a hospital recognized as one of the top 50 in the United States, the nursing staff has to meet a strict standard. So, those applying for a staff position and seeking to join the Graduate Registered Nurse Program being organized, must exceed those leadership and professionalism criteria expected from other nurses. The goal of this essay is to familiarize the Delray Medical Center recruitment staff with my qualifications and to provide proof that I do have the accumulated personal achievements, professional credentials and drive to not only succeed but thrive in this learning and working environment.

Many nursing students come to the profession after working the first few years of their professional life in another industry. My career entry was in bartending. Although this may not seem a likely segue into a nursing career, there are many parallels that I have found useful. Being successful at any customer service profession requires that the individual not only understand the product they are selling, but also enjoy working with and serving people. The nature of the bartending profession requires meeting a large number of people every day who in a variety of moods. The ten years I spent in the profession taught me how to care for people without regard to who they may have been in other phases of their lives and listen without forming judgments. This has served me well as a professional nurse because patients come from all walks and exhibit all manner of issues, but they all need the care and security presented by a knowledgeable professional.

While working full time for the past two years (?) I have embarked on a career change. Having progressed through a nursing program, it is simple to see that given my penchant for care, and love of people and their needs that this is a calling. Achieving a Registered Nursing License and working as a professional in the field can be seen by the dedication it took to graduate with a 4.0 grade point average and top honors in my class. They can also be seen in the endorsements I have received from colleagues and nursing instructors. It has been a privilege and a challenge reaching this stage of my journey, but I am anxious for the next phase to begin.
