Basically, associationism holds that the association of ideas can be used to explain mental processes. This paper is primarily concerned with associationism as a learning theory. In doing so, it highlights the main principles associated with the theory while examining three theorists whose contributions to the development of associationism cannot be overstated. The discussion also invokes associationism to explain mental processes associated with learning, and explains how associationism utilizes prior experience to account for how learning in individuals takes place. Additionally, it explains how permanent behavioral change comes about by depicting the application of the theory, and illustrates a number of settings in which learning takes place to demonstrate the theory's practical application.
As already noted, associationism as a learning theory remains one of the earliest and most enduring theories of learning (Hays, 2006). According to Harnish (2002), "associationism is the view that the mind is organized, at least in part, by principles of association." It is important to note that the dominant argument within this theory is that "items that 'go together' in experience will subsequently 'go together' in thought" (Harnish, 2002). Those advancing this theory are therefore of the opinion that most knowledge arises from experience, and that learning and thought are produced by a combination of items in the mind. In basic terms, the theory's core tenets are relatively easy to grasp: through experience, items become associated in the mind, and thought is essentially formed by the combination of these items. For instance, an individual learns not to touch a hot kettle as a result of associating such an action with pain — the individual may have experienced pain in the past as a result of touching a hot kettle. While Aristotle is seen by many as having significantly elaborated the theory, the revival of associationism is mainly credited to David Hume and John Locke.
The Major Principles of Associationism
According to Singh (1991), some of the better-known principles of associationism include contrast, contiguity, and similarity. A fourth principle — frequency — was also proposed by Aristotle during his examination of recall and remembrance processes.
According to the principle of contiguity, when events or happenings take place close to each other in either time or space, it is highly likely that they will be linked together in an individual's mind. For instance, if an individual thinks of a plate, he or she may also think of a spoon.
The principle of frequency holds that the association between two events or things is more powerful when they are linked together more often. For example, having cake with tea every day for ten years will produce a rather strong association between the two.
The principle of similarity states that if two items are alike or similar, thinking of one will most likely trigger the thought of the other. For example, thinking of one twin may lead an individual to think of the other twin as well.
Finally, the principle of contrast holds that if an individual recalls or perceives something, he or she may find themselves recalling something that is, in some way, the complete opposite of what is being recollected. A good example is where an individual who suddenly thinks of a very tall friend may simultaneously find himself or herself recalling a very short friend.
Theorists Who Developed Associationism
Associationism in its original form was proposed by Plato. However, it was Aristotle who significantly elaborated the theory by, among other things, identifying a number of laws or principles of association. Other notable figures associated with the theory include James Mill, David Hume, George Berkeley, and John Locke. This section focuses on John Stuart Mill, Hermann Ebbinghaus, and David Hartley, and explains how each contributed to the development of the theory as it is understood today. David Hartley is considered by many to be a "pioneer associationistic thinker" (Mishra, 2008). Hermann Ebbinghaus is taken by many to be modern associationism's starting point (Singh, 1991). John Stuart Mill is included here for his examination and advancement of the theory into the 19th century.
Through his book Observations on Man, Hartley is widely seen as having made significant contributions toward making associationism popular. He focused mainly on the principles of frequency and contiguity, and a close analysis of his ideas reveals some resemblance to those of Hebb. According to Singh (1991), Hartley is considered by many to be the father of British Associationism and is sometimes regarded as a contemporary of Hume. Singh (1991) further notes that Hartley's psychology appears to be a hybrid of the association of ideas as advanced by Locke and the theory of vibrations as proposed by Isaac Newton.
Two of the major associations identified by Hartley are simultaneous associations and successive associations. He argued that simultaneous associations arise when two elements occur at the same place or time. Successive associations, by contrast, occur when two or more ideas or elements follow one another in sequence, so that one idea, sensation, or element ends up being succeeded by another. Hartley also held that sensations were associated with ideas, meaning that association did not involve ideas alone.
Another well-known proponent of associationism is John Stuart Mill. Initially, the younger Mill built on ideas established by others before him, including his father James Mill and Hume. James Mill had originally suggested that ideas are linked together in what he called "compounds" — the central focus of his mechanistic theory. The younger Mill, however, disagreed with his father regarding the nature of associations. In his view, the mind played an active rather than a passive role in the formation of associations. This perspective was shaped by what came to be referred to as "mental chemistry." He also held that a whole idea could exceed the sum of its parts.
As far as the doctrine of association is concerned, Singh (1991) notes that the younger Mill's main assertion was that the basic elements of the mind were sensations and ideas. In addition to accepting the association laws his father had proposed, the younger Mill advanced further laws including intensity, contiguity, and similarity. Notably, James Mill had earlier identified contiguity as the only law of association (Singh, 1991).
A well-known German psychologist, Ebbinghaus is best known for subjecting the various principles or laws of association to systematic experimentation. He conducted various subsequent recall tests in an attempt to measure the resistance of associations. In this sense, Ebbinghaus was arguably the first individual to subject association to scientific scrutiny, as others before him had only described the principles without testing them. His research was primarily centered on the memorization of nonsense syllables. He would attempt to master a list by selecting a set of words, record the number of trials each attempt required, and then record the effects of various conditions — including the relearning of old material.

Through its pairing of experiences, the theory helps shed light on the processes of learning and thought. The relevance of associationism cannot be overstated in both learning and psychology.
