Audi's Global Supply Chain Strategy and JIT Distribution

~5 min read 6 sections Business · Supply Chain
Abstract

This paper analyzes Audi's global supply chain strategy, focusing on the company's use of a Just-in-Time (JIT) delivery model centered at its Ingolstadt, Germany production facility. It examines the six components of global supply chains as applied to Audi, identifies the five key elements—facilities, inventory, transportation, information sharing, and procurement—and explores the company's Distributor Storage with Carrier Delivery network design. The paper also discusses Audi's sourcing and distribution priorities, the role of the Guterverteilzentrum supplier complex, and concludes with recommendations for expanding the JIT model to additional global production plants, including considerations for adapting the approach to Asian markets.

What makes this paper effective

  • Applies a recognized supply chain framework (six components, five elements) directly to a real-world company, grounding abstract concepts in concrete examples.
  • Maintains a clear, logical progression from strategy selection through network design to actionable recommendations, giving the paper a coherent analytical arc.
  • Uses specific operational details—such as the Guterverteilzentrum complex and the order-to-delivery system—to support claims rather than relying on generalizations.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates applied framework analysis: it takes established supply chain management concepts and systematically maps them onto a single firm's operations. This technique shows the reader how theoretical models translate into real business decisions, which is a core skill in business and operations management coursework.

Structure breakdown

The paper opens with a brief company overview, then moves through strategy selection, supply chain components, and network design in successive sections. Each section builds on the previous one, narrowing from broad strategic choices to specific operational mechanisms. The final recommendations section closes the loop by proposing how Audi can extend its existing model globally. The structure mirrors a standard business analysis report format appropriate for an undergraduate audience.

Introduction

Audi produces luxury brand sedans for consumers around the world. As the manufacturer of premium automobiles, its main production facility is located in Ingolstadt, Germany, with additional plants in Hungary, China, Thailand, and Brazil. The company relies upon more than 1,000 suppliers throughout its global supply chain.

Selecting an International Strategy

The six components of global supply chains include: strategy and alignment; supply chain assets and routing; processes, procedures, and systems; planning and communication; outsourcing; and people and culture. A demand-driven plan and business model derived from real-time information is preferable, and it is one that Audi has developed over the years to enhance its standing in the marketplace. The company has built an adaptive and quick-footed supply chain, particularly in Ingolstadt, where it uses a Just-in-Time (JIT) supply delivery system.

Innovation has also been key to managing the company's success over time, with its vehicles reflecting consumer demand in the luxury brand market. Its supply chain allows Audi to keep costs low and efficiency high, as an order-to-delivery system is also in place. Audi's JIT strategy facilitates optimum communication; the company operates an in-house delivery system throughout Europe and outsources delivery in Asia. Its people and culture component is celebrated for promoting a values-based culture that upholds the integrity of the individual at every level.

Global Supply Chain Strategy

Sourcing and distribution are the two main strategic priorities that Audi focuses on for its global supply chain strategy. Because Audi does not "manufacture most of [its] parts, systems, and modules internally" (Diaz, 2006, p. 102), it must rely upon outsourcing to meet its needs. The nature of the business also demands that parts arrive quickly, which the JIT strategy makes possible. Parts are sent directly from the supplier in Guterverteilzentrum to the production line in Ingolstadt in a matter of minutes.

In other plants, the process is somewhat slower, as suppliers are not as centrally located relative to the production facility—which is why most of Audi's production is concentrated in Germany. Costs are kept low as a result, and responsiveness is immediate.
