The personality models associated with the biological approach are grounded in empirical human and animal findings concerning the associations between neurological system functions and personality dimensions. Traits measured within this framework include reward dependence, harm avoidance, and novelty-seeking, among others. The hypothesis is that these traits are shaped by genetic and neurochemical influences. For instance, sensation-seeking and exploratory tendencies—such as drug use—engage dopaminergic pathways, and this characteristic corresponds to novelty-seeking behavior as measured by the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ). People who score high on novelty-seeking tend to be impulsive and prone to risk-taking.

Serotonin is linked to harm and punishment avoidance; lower serotonin levels are associated with a more "neurotic" personality. Reward dependence is linked to noradrenaline. People who lean toward harm avoidance tend to be more affectionate and sentimental, while those at the opposite end of the scale tend to be pragmatic and tough. Heritable biases are reflected in personality profiles, and a number of traits correspond to one another. For instance, neuroticism is correlated with harm avoidance, while extroversion is correlated with novelty-seeking. This provides evidence for cross-validating measures with respect to their ability to capture personality (In Colarelli & In Arvey, 2015).

Eysenck's Personality Theory

Eysenck (1952, 1967, 1982) developed a highly influential personality model. On the basis of factor analyses of questionnaire responses, he proposed three personality dimensions: extroversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism. Hans Eysenck held that biology was the primary determinant of personality. Although his views were controversial in certain respects, he remains one of the most influential figures in the study of personality (McLeod, 2014). Beyond the role of genetics, Eysenck also believed that conditioning played a part in shaping personality. He argued that personality traits are hierarchical, with a small number of basic traits giving rise to many more superficial traits. Genetic differences in physiology make certain individuals more prone to behavioral conditioning. Eysenck suggested that introverts are more physiologically arousable and therefore more susceptible to conditioning by environmental stimuli. As a result, introverts develop more inhibitions, which can make them uncomfortable or shy in social situations.

He held that empirical evidence for genetic contributions to personality comes from two main types of studies: heritability studies and the study of temperament (Biological Approaches, n.d.). According to Eysenck, the two dimensions of neuroticism (stable vs. unstable) and introversion–extroversion combine to produce distinct personality characteristics.

Extroverts are sociable and seek change and excitement. They become bored easily and tend to be impulsive, carefree, and optimistic.

Introverts tend to be reserved. Their actions are planned, their emotions well-controlled, and they are typically reliable, serious, and somewhat pessimistic.

Neurotics/Unstables are often anxious, moody, and worried. They can be highly emotional and find it difficult to calm down once upset.

Stables are emotionally calm, unreactive, and seldom worried.

Eysenck (1966) later added a third dimension: psychoticism—characterized by a lack of empathy, troublesomeness, aggression, and social isolation. He related individual personalities to the functioning of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), arguing that personality depends on the balance between inhibition and excitation in the nervous system. The nervous systems of neurotic individuals tend to respond more rapidly to stress (Biological Approaches, n.d.).

Cattell's 16PF Trait Theory

Cattell (1965) disagreed with Eysenck's approach of describing personality through only two or three behavioral dimensions. He argued that it was essential to examine a greater number of traits in order to evaluate a person's personality more accurately (McLeod, 2014). While Eysenck's theory was based largely on the responses of hospitalized servicemen, Cattell drew his data from a much wider range of sources:

L-data — Life record data, such as school grades and absence from work.

Q-data — Questionnaire data structured to assess individual personality.

T-data — Data collected from objective tests designed to tap into personality constructs.

Cattell analyzed the Q-data and T-data using factor analysis, a mathematical technique that reveals which behaviors tend to cluster within the same individuals. This process identified 16 personality traits common to all humans. Cattell distinguished between surface traits—which are relatively easy to observe—and source traits, which are harder to identify but exert a broader influence on behavior. He argued that source traits carry greater weight in determining an individual's personality (Biological Approaches, n.d.).
