What makes this paper effective

  • The paper moves logically from plot summary to thematic analysis to personal application, giving the reflection a clear and satisfying arc.
  • Specific scenes from the film — the hammer incident, the attempted stabbing, the scholarship win — are cited as concrete evidence to support thematic claims rather than vague generalization.
  • The personal reflection section is candid and specific, connecting the film's themes to the author's own experience with ambition and self-doubt in a way that feels genuine rather than formulaic.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates effective textual evidence integration within a reflection format: the author cites specific scenes and story beats from the film to ground each thematic point before pivoting to first-person application. This balance — evidence first, personal connection second — prevents the reflection from becoming purely anecdotal and keeps it anchored to the source material.

Structure breakdown

The paper has three paragraphs functioning as four logical sections: an introduction that establishes the film and its central thesis; a body section analyzing Ben Carson's obstacles and achievements through key scenes; and a personal reflection that applies the film's lessons to the author's own life. The conclusion is embedded within the final paragraph rather than standing separately.

Introduction: Ben Carson's Remarkable Story

Thomas Carter's 2009 film Gifted Hands is based on the life of neurosurgeon Ben Carson. In the movie, Cuba Gooding, Jr. stars as Ben Carson. The film is not primarily about neurosurgery, although it does show how tremendously gifted Carson was at his chosen profession. The life and death of patients is sometimes held in the hands of the neurosurgeon, and the opening sequence of the film highlights the importance of the profession. It shows the older Ben reluctantly agreeing to perform a surgery to separate conjoined twins in Germany. When he ultimately agrees, he becomes committed to saving the lives of both babies, and his work earns him tremendous accolades.

What makes Ben Carson's story remarkable is not just how wonderful a neurosurgeon he became, but also how he overcame personal and environmental obstacles in order to reach that position. In this autobiographical film, the viewer learns how to overcome personal obstacles and achieve dreams through hard work and determination.

Personal Obstacles and the Path to Self-Discovery

The personal obstacles that Ben Carson had to overcome included his experience with a broken home, and especially his inability to manage his anger early in life. When he was young, Ben seemed almost to have given up on life — and especially on school. Here was one of the smartest kids in the class earning failing grades simply because he did not care. Young Ben did not believe that he could go on to do great things, like becoming a doctor and saving lives.

However, with the help of his mother, Ben realizes that he actually has an affinity for math. In one scene, young Ben is shown enjoying the mastery of multiplication tables. He also starts reading extensively, partly because his mother demanded that he and his brother watch less television. Another major personal obstacle was his bad temper. In one scene, Ben is shown about to strike his mother with a hammer. He is also shown trying to stab a friend, though he just missed. These scenes highlight the tremendous personal barriers Ben Carson had to overcome before he could devote time to his education and career.
