NIBCO ERP Big Bang Implementation: Analysis and Review

~4 min read 3 sections Business · Enterprise Resource Planning
Abstract

This paper examines NIBCO's decision to implement an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system using a "Big Bang" approach, in which the company simultaneously converted all ten plants and four North American distribution centers to SAP R/3 within approximately 15 months. The paper explores the inadequacies of NIBCO's legacy information systems, the integration benefits that ERP provided, and the tradeoffs inherent in the Big Bang methodology. It also offers recommendations for project management, including the potential advantages of a more gradual rollout and a stronger emphasis on change management within the Tiger Triad governance structure.

Key Takeaways
  • Reasons for ERP Adoption at NIBCO: Legacy system failures and globalization goals drove ERP adoption
  • The Big Bang Approach: Pros and Cons: Speed and resource focus weighed against risk and distraction
  • Project Management Analysis and Recommendations: Gradual rollout and stronger change management recommended

What makes this paper effective

  • Clearly organizes a case study analysis into three logical sections: rationale, method evaluation, and recommendations.
  • Balances both sides of the Big Bang debate by converting the same factors (speed, resource concentration) into both pros and cons, demonstrating nuanced thinking.
  • Grounds claims in specific textual evidence from the Brown and Vessey case study, with page-level citations throughout.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates applied case analysis: it takes a real business scenario and evaluates it against broader ERP implementation principles. Rather than simply summarizing events, it assesses management decisions and proposes a counterfactual (gradual rollout) supported by evidence from the case itself.

Structure breakdown

The paper moves in three clear stages. The first section establishes why ERP was necessary for NIBCO by citing legacy system failures and strategic globalization goals. The second section weighs the advantages and disadvantages of the Big Bang deployment method. The third section delivers a critical assessment and concrete recommendations, including extended post-Go Live support and greater emphasis on change management within the Tiger Triad structure.

Reasons for ERP Adoption at NIBCO

There are a number of specific reasons that NIBCO made a dedicated effort to implement an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Firstly, the company ascertained from a number of different sources that its information technology systems prior to the ERP implementation were insufficient. The company had not invested in any of these resources for several years, and determined from various consulting companies and upper-level management appraisals that it "could not prosper" with its plethora of "legacy systems" (Brown and Vessey, 2001, p. 468).

Additionally, one of the particular problems NIBCO was experiencing was that its legacy systems were all functioning as silos and effectively "could not talk to each other" (Brown and Vessey, 2001, p. 468). ERP directly addresses these issues in a couple of different ways. It functions as an integration hub between a number of various modules for respective business units in an organization, and maintains a centralized database that helps facilitate the integration process. Additionally, implementing ERP assisted the company in its future goals of globalizing and becoming an organization with a presence across several different countries and continents. Most importantly, an ERP system provided a means of modernizing NIBCO's information management infrastructure in a way that would allow it to incorporate newer technologies in the future while still maintaining a basis for sharing those resources throughout the enterprise.

The Big Bang Approach: Pros and Cons

There were both pros and cons to the particular method NIBCO deployed in order to expedite the implementation of its SAP system. That method, known as the "Big Bang," pertained to the fact that in a relatively short amount of time — approximately 15 months — the company would attempt to "convert to SAP R/3 at all ten plants and the four North American distribution centers at the same time" (Brown and Vessey, 2001, p. 468).

One of the primary benefits of this approach was that it aimed to accomplish its goal within a brief timeframe, which would certainly benefit the organization if successful. Additionally, the organization would dedicate a substantial amount of resources and attention to completing this objective, which is another advantage of this approach. Conversely, however, each of these pros can also be viewed as cons. By setting such a compressed deadline, the company risked not allowing itself enough time to complete the task properly. Furthermore, by dedicating so much attention and so many resources to this project, the company diverted them away from core business objectives and from seizing new opportunities that could have assisted in reaching those objectives.

In terms of analysis and recommendations for how the project was managed, it is quite obvious that the Big Bang approach was certainly ambitious in terms of scope and implementation. A more gradual implementation — involving the three-to-five year process of…
