Planning and Requirements Definition
The planning stage is the most vital phase in the SDLC for ensuring a high chance of success for the system being developed (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). The nurse leader is responsible for providing a healthcare plan to the system developers. In conjunction with other nurses, the nurse leader will determine the scope of the problem and the potential solutions. This information is then communicated to the system developers, as the nurse leader serves as the liaison between clinical staff and the development team. The information provided by the nurse leader will be used to plan the best method for developing the system.
System requirements are identified by the nurse leader after consulting with colleagues and gathering their input. The inputs and outputs of the system are defined in this phase and incorporated into the development plan. The system developers will then formulate a plan for coding the inputs provided. This collaborative approach ensures that the resulting system reflects the practical realities of nursing workflows from the very beginning.
