Red raspberry leaf can easily be purchased in stores and is mainly consumed through teas marketed as "pregnancy tea." Through the analysis of various research studies, the effectiveness of red raspberry leaf during pregnancy will be assessed. While empirical evidence exists for its ability to improve contractions during childbirth and assist in balancing hormones during pregnancy, a word of caution must be applied when using RRL. This is because of the powerful effect RRL can have on hormones and insulin sensitivity or insulin resistance.

Results: Effects on Uterine Function and Labor

RRL has been shown to be effective in various ways for pregnant women and women experiencing childbirth. A study published in 2016 demonstrated the effects of RRL on uterine contractions using female mice. The results reported by Olson and DeGolier (2016) show that contractions occur unless certain drugs — such as nifedipine and salbutamol — are added to prevent them. As the authors noted, this provides "empirical evidence for the traditional use of RRL as an herbal uterotonic," though it "does not address the relative effectiveness of ingested RRL on the labor and birth processes" (Olson & DeGolier, 2016, p. 39). Such findings may support the use of RRL as an herb useful for facilitating childbirth.

Although RRL may help with contractions, at higher doses it may actually relax the uterus and inhibit contractions (Howland, 2019). One potential benefit identified in the literature is the reduction of artificial rupture of membranes with RRL use (Dekker, 2018). An earlier study also found that "ingestion of the drug might decrease the likelihood of pre and post-term gestation" (Parsons, Simpson, & Ponton, 1999, p. 20), an area warranting further investigation. Whether pregnancy in general benefits from daily administration of RRL and other holistic approaches remains an open question, as discussed by Dugoua (2018).

Another study highlighted the antioxidant and anticancer properties of RRL, which may signal broader balancing effects on hormones. As Veljkovic et al. (2018) found, "wild raspberry leaf and fruit extracts contain numerous secondary metabolites providing marked antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer activity" (p. 359). Overall, studies have shown RRL to be a promising herbal option for improving uterine contractions and balancing female sex hormones (Romm, 2017).

Results: Hormonal and Metabolic Effects

RRL may also have positive effects on insulin requirements in women with gestational diabetes. Women with this condition typically require insulin in response to hyperglycemia. However, Cheang, Nguyen, Karjane, and Salley (2016) demonstrated that RRL can induce hypoglycemia in women with gestational diabetes who are on insulin. Specifically, "a 38-year-old nulliparous woman with GDM developed hypoglycemia requiring a lowered insulin dose after consuming raspberry leaf tea at 32 weeks of gestation" (Cheang, Nguyen, Karjane, & Salley, 2016, p. 1421). These results suggest that RRL may help expectant mothers by lowering potential insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance has been shown to suppress hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. When hormone replacement therapy was administered, it significantly increased insulin sensitivity in affected women (Bitoska et al., 2016). This raises an important question: could RRL's apparent ability to lower insulin resistance — or increase insulin sensitivity — stem from its capacity to balance or increase sex hormone levels?

RRL may also improve conditions like gestational diabetes through its effects on estrogen and progesterone in women with low baseline levels (Cheang, Nguyen, Karjane, & Salley, 2016; Gladstar, 2017). However, women with overall good health should approach RRL with caution and prioritize a sound dietary plan, since herbs like RRL have the potential to disrupt the internal hormonal balance of the female body.
