Space Antenna Inc. is a satellite antenna manufacturing operation. At the heart of the business is the idea that antennas can deliver more features at a lower price, which means that current technology must be leapfrogged by the next generation. Antennae are essential to communicating with satellites, and a large portion of global communications depends on these satellites to transmit information quickly from one part of the world to another — and in some cases to relay information gathered by the satellites themselves back to Earth. The focus of Space Antenna Inc. is to deliver the next generation of antenna that can do more, which carries several benefits for the end user: greater efficiency, higher productivity, increased revenue, and decreased costs, resulting in dramatically improved profit.

The company will therefore invest heavily in research and development. There are several areas where we believe a technological breakthrough is within reach, and if we can achieve it, we expect to win substantial market share fairly quickly. We founded this company with an engineering-forward mindset because technological leadership is essential to success. Lagging in technology would relegate us to smaller deals with less desirable clients, whereas our goal is to pursue major contracts and, over the course of a few years, capture a significant share of the market. Engineering is therefore the primary point of emphasis at this stage.

Industry Analysis

The antenna business is part of the broader telecommunications industry, and clients are typically large telecoms, military organizations, and government agencies. The keys to success in this industry are to continually increase transmission capacity and deliver better connections — in particular to support high-definition programming and the transmission of massive data sets (Silverstein, 2013). Buyers want equipment that is "more reliable, easier to use, smaller and less expensive than before, just to stay competitive" (Silverstein, 2013). This is reflected in our company motto, "Include more, save more," because buyers want a feature-rich system that is both reliable and cost-effective. While this sounds like a difficult task, it reflects the direction the antenna industry is heading, and with each technological innovation these seemingly competing goals can — and often are — met.

The overall size of the industry is substantial. The global antenna market is estimated at $17.54 billion today and is projected to reach $25.46 billion by 2023, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.61%. This means the industry is growing faster than the broader economy, driven by society's increasing appetite for connectivity (MI, 2017).

In general, there are a handful of major companies in the industry, for several reasons. First, startup costs are relatively high. Technological advances occur frequently, so any company entering the antenna business needs engineers who are current with the latest developments. Capital requirements are significant, and if a team cannot deliver a superior product there will be little demand for what it produces. Research and development are essential.

Most companies seek to produce the best possible antennae at a low price, making the industry highly competitive. However, strong demand also means there may be room for an innovative new player. Buyers are generally large organizations, and antennae are critical to their operations, so there is some seller bargaining power — though it is limited by buyer size. Suppliers can generally be managed, except in the case of rare components. The intensity of rivalry is high, given the small number of major firms competing for a small number of major customers. Each deal matters significantly, especially larger contracts. Competition for smaller deals is less intense. All told, the space antenna industry is moderately attractive, and the degree of attractiveness depends heavily on a company's technological standing.
