Abstract

This essay examines four of the seven individual characteristics of successful small business owners identified by Megginson et al. (2003), presented in order of importance. The paper argues that dedication to one's business is the most critical trait, followed by a strong sense of initiative, the ability to react quickly to changing conditions, and a desire for independence. For each characteristic, the essay explains why it matters and how it contributes to small business success, distinguishing owner-operated enterprises from larger corporate firms and highlighting the competitive advantages that these personal qualities create.

What makes this paper effective

  • The paper establishes a clear organizational principle from the outset — ranking characteristics from most to least important — which gives the essay a logical, easy-to-follow structure.
  • Each characteristic is supported by a rationale explaining not just what the trait is, but why it matters and how it differentiates small business owners from executives at large corporations.
  • The use of multiple citations (Megginson et al., Stephenson, Beesley) demonstrates engagement with both academic and practitioner sources, lending credibility to the analysis.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper uses a ranked analytical framework to organize its argument. Rather than simply listing traits, it prioritizes them and justifies the ordering, which reflects critical thinking beyond mere description. This technique — evaluating and sequencing evidence by significance — is a foundational skill in undergraduate business writing.

Structure breakdown

The essay opens with a framing introduction that identifies the source framework and announces the essay's scope. It then devotes one section to each of the four characteristics, maintaining a consistent pattern: name the trait, explain its significance, and connect it to business outcomes. The structure is methodical and mirrors the numbered-list format of the original taxonomy, making the argument easy to trace from beginning to end.

Introduction

Megginson et al. (2003) identify seven individual characteristics of successful small business owners. This essay discusses four of those characteristics in order of priority, from the most important to the least important. For each characteristic, the discussion explains why it is significant and how it contributes to the success of small business owners (Megginson et al., 2003).

Dedication to Their Business

What a small business owner gains from a business is largely determined by what he or she puts into it. Having genuine desire and commitment is essential. Small business owners tend to be extraordinarily devoted to their companies. Because these are personally owned enterprises, owners are invested in ensuring that their hard work, determination, and effort produce results rather than go to waste (Stephenson, 2014).

This characteristic is considered the most important of the four because the owner's level of enthusiasm is directly reflected in the success or failure of the business. This kind of passion and hunger for prosperity is what most often distinguishes small business owners from executives at large corporations. Owners tend to perceive their business as something they have personally created and nurtured. For this reason, they are committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure the business runs smoothly and effectively (Stephenson, 2014).
