During the course of any disaster, Walmart employees are among the first to respond. The issue of workplace safety requires brands to take ownership of safety measures, particularly regarding fire outbreaks in industrial settings. Walmart's operations play a significant role in addressing worker demands for a safe workplace, and the company has directed considerable effort toward strengthening safety measures as a result.
Internationally, Walmart is recognized as the largest retailer in the world, and in Bangladesh it is rated as the largest buyer. Walmart decided to lend its support to a fire safety inspection program, adopting partnerships with PVH (owners of Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger) and Tchibo (a German retailer) to ensure that all subject suppliers enacted basic safety regulations and that their workforces complied with them. This initiative has improved working conditions for workers in Bangladesh and, in doing so, has helped safeguard the right to life of workers, including those employed by Walmart (Bogardus, 2004).
Vendor partners have the mandate to issue the certificate form. The vendors conduct inspections on behalf of Walmart, focusing on facilities involved in the production of merchandise that Walmart sells. One or more officers from the vendor partners carry out these inspections. Each inspection is conducted at least four times per year to ensure that facilities comply with the terms, conditions, and standards that have been established. The officer from the vendor partner who performs the inspection is responsible for providing Walmart with a certificate of merit after each completed inspection (Robinson, Franklin, & Wayland, 2010).
Data collected from all safety program inspections is directed to and tracked through the Corrective Action Log. Whenever a risk score was not assigned during the inspection itself, it is assigned at this stage. Once all data has been incorporated into the minutes of the safety committee and worker issues have been documented, feedback is communicated to workers regarding the matters being addressed.
Workers and authorized professional trainers typically conduct defined equipment inspections. Examples of defined equipment inspections include: inspecting mobile equipment, inspecting fire extinguishers weekly, conducting annual inspections of fire safety equipment, performing monthly emergency light checks, conducting annual inspections of life safety equipment, and reviewing first aid equipment inventories weekly. Completed report forms are forwarded to the applicable supervisors to correct deficiencies and are filed for a minimum of five inspections per year (Bogardus, 2004).
